Over the last year or so I've acquired the tendency to start my backswing with a very slight lateral bump away from the target. In an effort to keep my upper swing center fixed throughout my swing, I've been trying to start my swing by rotating before I bump over to my right side. This has caused my driver clubhead speed to drop by about 10mph. Crazily, I seem to be hitting my irons more crisp than ever ( 2 degree push with a slight draw ). It's really hard to get into a rhythm with my driver without that bump. I guess my irons are OK since I didn't bump very far to my right anyway with them (narrower stance). I was watching a video of Anthony Kim and noticed he bumps a little to his right, but once he establishes his head position, it stays fixed until after impact. What's up with the bump? Is it good or bad?

Before you tried to fix this bump how were you hitting the ball? It sounds like you are saying that you tried to start rotating before the bump. Why? I say either bump or no bump and if you do use the bump let it happen naturally. You are a 3 handicap right? I seriously doubt this bump was a big problem. Work on your putting.

The bump to the right helps me trigger a smooth takeaway by getting everything moving in one piece...otherwise the takeaway can get 'handsy'. I've always been pretty good about not bumping to far to the right, but the tendency is to bump back to the left at the start of my downswing which I've been trying to avoid. So I thought I would just pre-set my upper swing center in the right location before starting my swing. Reference this video of tiger woods and notice how his swing center doesn't move away from the target as he starts his backswing:

Now compare it to this video of Anthony Kim: It seem like Anthony has a very slight rightwards (away from target) bump before his club really gets moving in his backswing. My question is: does anyone here do this and what are the reasons why you do it. Is it hard to time? To me, it feels pretty natural and relieves all of the tension in my body before my club gets moving. It seems to create a kind of rhythm.

    • I’m not sure I agree. It’s just what the majority find more entertaining. Most people prefer women’s gymnastics over men in the Olympics. How much hype is there with the men’s compared to the women’s? I bet you can rattle off several big names in women’s gymnastics and only a handful of men. Women’s tennis …same thing. And sure enough, their purses are the same. However, WNBA, awful…LPGA, not near as much interest than PGA. Don’t think it’s really that complicated IMO.

    • Hence your Avatar!😜 I drink a lot of water during the day if I’m playing or exercising. I get cramps otherwise.
    • If you walk up to a food/drink kiosk at Magic Kingdom and ask the person for a cup of "magic water" they will give you a small cup of Sprite for free. About 3 fingers worth. They don't sell alcohol at MK anymore so I go over to one of the courses while she hangs out there.
    • This isn't some kind of natural fact. It's a lot more complicated than this implies.
