Nebraska / Kansas in March

Looking to head somewhat south for a week during spring break this year. Being a broke college student, I don't have the money to fly anywhere warm and with only a week off from school and work I don't want to spend too much time in the car. I've kind of settled on Nebraska (mainly Omaha area) and if necessary I'll go into Kansas to get to some golfing weather.

What I'm wondering is what can I expect mainly for Course opennings (all of them? most of them? only the crappy ones?)

It should be warm enough to play, but I want to make sure courses are going to be open before I go down there. I've contacted some of the courses over the past couple of days and haven't had any responses yet as to when they open or if they are open year round as their websites don't give too much information.

Anybody from the Omaha or middle eastern Nebraska have any information that would be useful? Any course suggestions? Should I go further south for more courses to be open? Anybody got anything?

I'm from South Dakota but have a good friend who lives in Omaha. We are also heading down there to play on the weekend of March 28th. March in Omaha is usually hit or miss, if you get lucky and the weather holds up there is definitely come great golf in that area.

Two courses that I highly recommend are both in Ashland (suburb):

I've played a lot of golf and these are two of my favorites. Both have a great replay rate too so you can get 36 in if the weather permits. I think they even have a stay and play deal that includes both courses.

Courses will be open, all of them, not just the crappy ones. Weather can be hit or miss, for sure there is still a chance of frost and they will not allow play until the frost is off the greens.

If you make to to KS, I would HIGHLY recommend Colbert Hills . $40.00 before 1PM till March 31st is a STEAL!

Thanks for the input and course suggestions.

Had checked out Quarry Oaks before but not Iron Horse.

Had my eyes on Colbert Hills as well, but after seeing how many courses are in the Omaha area and the prices they offer (usually under 30 for 18 holes) I can't see going all the way down there for the whole trip. May have to sneak down there one day though. I'm sure it's well worth the couple hour drive from the looks of it.

How far south must I go to play in February? Will Omaha be okay? or down to Kansas?

I've played there a bit, wanted to play Tregaron but never did, it looks like it is a links type. Benson Park was fun, lots of elevation changes. Shoreline was ok. Arbor Links was one of the golf digest best new courses of the year a couple of years ago, it is by Nebraska City...... jmoc

Colbert Hills may not be the best choice for an early season round. You should go to Manhattan when you're playing your very best. It's quite humbling...

Heard about Colbert being a beast, but when its the nicest course in the area and for the winter rates they have I'd have to play it if I was there. No way I would pass it up.

Nobody has mentioned Rolling Meadows in Junction City (near Manhattan). I've heard good things about this course. Anybody played it? Opinions?

I've played Rolling Meadows, it's okay, I wasn't overwhelmed by it. I would much rather play Colbert Hills it's much nicer but more difficult. I played Colbert Hills 2 years ago in the middle of March, had warm weather, got in two rounds on one day and we paid something like $60.

Depending on how far you want to go Wichita has some really nice city courses, they are very resonably priced and they are easy to walk. My two favorites are Auburn Hills and McDonald. Also, Sand Creek Station in Newton and Cottonwood Hills in Hutchinson.

If you are in the Kansas City area, try Tomahawk, Falcon Lakes, Heritage Park, Shoal Creek or Swope.

I went to school in Grand Forks, and did this same thing about 20 years ago!! We drove to Omaha in mid March, and were able to find courses to play. It was awful darn cold, however, but we played. I believe we played the University Course, but it's been a long time. We then drove to Lincoln and played several courses there, and again, names escape me. Cold in the morning, but nice during the day. Then, on the way back, we ran into a heck of a blizzard. So, it is hit and miss. Have a great time.

Well the weather was excellent here in Omaha until we recently got another four inches of snow . But its melting quickly..... so i got that goin for me.... which is nice

The weather is gonna be very hit and miss, but I think two of the better public courses in the area were covered (Quarry Oaks and Iron Horse). The back nine at Quarry Oaks is gorgeous!

But if you are looking for a couple of cheaper alternatives as well, I would suggest Tiburon and Indian Creek. They are pretty challenging layouts from the back tees and are reasonably priced.
