If you watch the Golf Channel even a little bit, I'm sure you've seen the ads for tonight's show "Uneven Fairways", a documentary about the history of African Americans in the game of golf in America.

The teaser ads have me intrigued. I'll be watching it.

Of course it's being aired now because February is Black History Month in the US.

What do you think about this show?
Will you watch/not watch? Why?
Do you have any first hand experience of race issues as it pertains to the game of golf that you'd be willing to share?

Being a Gen-X'er, I have no direct experience and I must admit it seemed odd to me at first when I heard that African-Americans weren't allowed into the PGA, and it was even in their rules. Guess that's how much mindsets have changed in such a short time.

I thought it was a great documentary. It's pretty cool that Calvin Peete won the Players Championship even though he didn't start playing golf until he was 23.

I'm planning on watching it. I think even though a lot of headway has been made, there is still de facto racism in golf. Where I live in the deep south Alabama, the majority of the guys playing our courses are white. It's still a "country club" mentality, maybe it's because the green fees are $30-50. Organizations like the First Tee have done a great job of giving underprivileged kids, white and black, the opportunity of learning our great game.

On another similar note, think about the PGA before Tiger, you had Davis Love, Payne Stewart, Phil Mickelson, etc, but not too many black guys.

I DVR'ed this and watched it last week. I thought it was a very interesting story worth telling to a broader audience.

The question I would have is how much have attitudes really changed? Still feels to me like there is a bit of an elitest mentality unless you have talent...
