FT-9 9.5* with 65-X Grafalloy ProLaunch Blue

Right off the bat, this is not the same 'ol FT. Gone is the feeling of the hollow thud off the face and the clank of a sound. From what I've been told the distribution of the two materials used (graphite and titanium) are entirely different. Hence the new, slightly crisper feel. Not quite the ting of a Talymade, but again, nothing like the thud of the FT-3 or FT-5.

With the new distribution the weighting is changed as well. Swinging the club it feels as though the weight is more on the sole of the club. I can assume to give it a lower center of gravity to get the ball up faster.

At first it took me a while to figure the club out. I hadn't swung anything in two days so it was just a matter of feeling confident enough to give it a real swing. Especially since I went with the X Stiff shaft. But, once my swing was feeling right, and I took some real rips at it. I clobbered the thing. Nice looking trajectory and good distance. My course is soaking wet from two solid days of rain, so I didn't get a real gauge on any extra distance over the FT-5. But it sure feels nicer.

if your on the Callaway staff, can you help me with a question? Im looking for a shaft to pop on my FT-9 head and im trying to find a good quality shaft from Callaway preowned for under 100$. My swing speed is 86 mph so I think im looking for a regular shaft. I prefer a higher ball flight and i dont know a thing about the kick point.

I don't know about any of that stuff either. I play by feel, never been into knowing about technical aspects of equipment. Try finding a demo day in your area, this is the season. We just had a Callaway one at my course. You'll be able to try all sorts of shaft/head combos. Sorry I can't be more help on specifics of your needs. Personally, I just switched to Aldila from Grafalloy. I think the Alidla has a little bit of a softer feel compared to the Grafalloy I had. I'd also say, just test around with lofts of the head as well. What loft is the one that you have? I'd think as someone looking for regular that 10* or 10.5* would be good for you.

with 86mph i would still go stiff. my swing speed with a 6 iron was 82 and the shaft optimizer recommended a stiff shaft soft stepped.

There's no reason he should be playing a stiff shaft. Regular is right where pretty much all shaft manufacturers would put him.

You can't compare your 6iron swing speed to his driver swing speed. Nor can you compare your 6iron speed to your driver speed. The driver is always going to be faster than an iron just because of the length of the shaft. My 6iron is also in the mid 80's but my driver is in the low 100's.

Hey Ben,

Now that you have been gaming the FT Tour, do you prefer it over your FT-9 from last year? I have been using my FT-9 since the beginning of last year, and when I went to demo the new drivers this year I didn't really find one that I liked. I found the FT Tour too muted. Tried the Diable Tour yesterday and it felt great, but I don't think they make it in the Imix setup so I won't be using it.

Thanks for the reply. Im kinda stuck in the middle because im only 13 years old and ive been growing and cutting strokes off every time I play. I'm currently playing a 10.5* reg driver (2007 Burner) and I find I get a lot more control and 5-10 more yards with the FT-9. My preferred trajectory is low-mid because at Torrey Pines (home course) the ball rolls a long way. I have always liked Adila on my hybrid, so I will be sure to check them out. I appreciate the post.

yea but why would the shaft optimizer say a stiff shaft soft stepped with a 6 iron at 82 mph, but when you swing a driver 82 mph you need a regular shaft?

Hey Ben.

Decided to go with the 9 degree neutral head with with Grafalloy Prolaunch Blue Regular Shaft. Felt like a perfect combination on the range, with the mid height and perfect amount of roll I was looking for. Driver should be here Tuesday. Grand total from Callaway pre owened was $124 with trade in from my Burner. Thanks for your help. Will let you how it feels on Tuesday!
