You can either put in the title that you are going to say what happens or you can use these cool spoiler tags. If I'm not mistaken, they are there to be used. Either way, just do one of the two please. It's really nice to ruin it for others.

I think the saner approach is "if you don't want to have something about golf spoiled for you, don't visit a golf forum." I'm going to guess you avoided visiting "europeantour.com" right?

In other words, I disagree with your stance on this. I'd rather have useful thread titles (for searchability) than a bunch of "Spoiler Alert - Tournament Name." How long should an embargo on thread names last? An hour? Four hours? Sixteen? Until the next tournament starts? And you seem to act as if others should know Golf Channel coverage of the event hadn't concluded - but there's no Golf Channel coverage in the UK or the other countries where we have members.

I have a DVR. If I want to watch something unspoiled, I avoid looking at places where things might be spoiled. I take responsibility for my own "non-spoiling." I don't ask that others take responsibility for it.

Then why do you even bother with spoiler tags then Erik? Get rid of them if we aren't supposed to use them.
Because you disagree, I guess that means you are right? As usual? Because only other people can be wrong?

Why do people put the frickin result right in the thread title?

Because there are other uses. Hiding the punch line of a joke, the answer to a rules or trivia question, etc.

"I disagree" does not mean "you are wrong," nor did I say anything along those lines. I simply pointed out the reasons why I disagree, and why I'm okay with people not over-using spoilers for tournaments.

Why do people put the frickin result right in the thread title?

Because that's what people do.

Why do you visit a golf forum when you don't want to know the results of a tournament that's already concluded?

I'd rather have useful thread titles (for searchability) than a bunch of "Spoiler Alert - Tournament Name."

A thread would be just a useful if the spoiler feature was used. How would neglecting this feature make the thread "more useful" (other then adding 1 additional click of the mouse)? The search feature checks the title as well as the body of the thread so I'm not sure where you are going here.

Because there are other uses. Hiding the punch line of a joke, the answer to a rules or trivia question, etc.

And winners of tournaments (especially minutes after they are completed).

I have a DVR. If I want to watch something unspoiled, I avoid looking at places where things might be spoiled. I take responsibility for my own "non-spoiling." I don't ask that others take responsibility for it.

I guess I would expect others to be as courteous and I am and not post the winner in the title block....again just an overestimation of people in general on my part.

Why do you visit a golf forum when you don't want to know the results of a tournament that's already concluded?

Because there are multiple categories, not just "Tour Talk". Like I posted in the "JWC thread" I intentionally stayed away from the "Tour Talk" portion but the main pages last post preview showed "Danny Lee wins Johnnie Walker classic".

A thread would be just a useful if the spoiler feature was used.

I was primarily talking about the title, which is key for searching (both on Google and within the forum search).

A title is far more valuable as a "search location" because it's also the page title (which helps Google and other search engines), and because this forum's search tool lets you specify "thread title" as a search scope. So that's where I'm going there. Search engines work a certain way, and certain fields (like the title) matter more than others.
I guess I would expect others to be as courteous and I am and not post the winner in the title block....again just an overestimation of people in general on my part.

I wouldn't so much call it an over-estimation as I would call it an unrealistic expectation. The tournament was over. How long should people wait before posting a thread about it on the off chance that someone who does NOT want to know the result is browsing a GOLF forum of all places.

It might be a bit more realistic if we were all in the U.S. and all knew the broadcast schedule, but we're not.
Because there are multiple categories, not just "Tour Talk". Like I posted in the "JWC thread" I intentionally stayed away from the "Tour Talk" portion but the main pages last post preview showed "Danny Lee wins Johnnie Walker classic".

Well, that's just a bit unlucky.

Regardless, when I don't want to be spoiled about something, I simply avoid places where I'm likely to see the result.

True! You just have to use good sense and avoid any exposure where unwanted information might be present. I play on Sundays and I avoid the starters window or the pro shop if there is a TV on. I inform my playing partners I don't want to know any tournament results. The last thing I would ever do is visit this forum before watching the days golf events.

I turned on my TV late in the day on a Sunday once and they had been replaying the tournament I was about to watch on the DVR. Right at that moment there was a shot of the winner holding up the trophy. Now I am very careful to mute the sound and activate the DVR menu before the picture even pops on the screen. I go right to the TiVo menu before any accidentlal exposure the golf results can occur. SubPar

DVRs should have a "sports mode." If you're recording a show that meets certain criteria, it should require you to type something on your remote to activate the display, but should let you do other things (like go to your recording list, or rewind to the start, etc.).

That'd be useful. I bet a significant portion of DVR use is for sports. When I start watching a hockey game or a football game I'll shield my eyes from the top 3/4 of the screen (and turn mute on). The bottom 3/4 has the playback bar so I can rewind.

Fair enough.

Well, that's just a bit unlucky.

Guess that is the best way to ensure that one can watch the event unspoiled.

However, it would be nice if the masses would use the spoiler feature so we have the option of visiting a golf forum (for people who plan on watching a taped event that is) after a tournament is complete.

I place a piece of cardboard over the TV where the ticker-tape runs.

However, it would be nice

Well of course it would be nice. But that doesn't change the fact that it's also unreasonable.

I gave it a button - not every custom tag has a button in the editor, after all - so I don't know what more I as the admin/owner can do. P.S. The image for the spoiler button is a sleeping mask. I really couldn't think of anything better that would work at such a small size. Suggestions?

I agree with iacas (should I call him iacas, Erik, or Mr. Barzeski?). I would never watch SportsCenter if I recorded a basketball game. I would spoil it myself. I think it is the spoilee's (Smallville's) responsibility to look out for the spoiler (the thread). That's just my opinion anyway.

That answer that?

There's no need to pile on with "I agrees" or "I disagrees" unless you have something new to add. Spoiler functionality exists, but people tend not to useit. Just the way it is.

    • At a basic level, you can take those strokes gained numbers and if you know what the baseline strokes to hole out is from each distance, you can figure out how many strokes on average you will take to hole out from any given spot on the golf course. Then you can take that shot zone thing from shotscope and put it down there and see what the average is for each club and each target you choose. That's not exactly trivial to do though even with a computer, so the strategy guides (like LSW) use rules of thumb to make those decisions easier for you to make on the fly. Most of the time you'll come up with the optimal strategy and on the odd occasion when you don't, the strategy you come up with will be pretty darn close to optimal. If you're anything like me, then you'll probably wind up being a little too conservative with both club choice and target. Fear of penalty strokes can make you play suboptimally. Basically it's a bad idea to base your strategy on a shot that might pop up less than 1 in 20 times. If you happen to hit that shot, then today just isn't your day, but the 19 times you don't, you'll be in that much better of a spot.
    • That sounds like a small sample size issue. What if the PGA tour event he was trying to get into just happened to fit his game perfectly? Also, he could just be playing hot right now. I’ll put this in the wait-and-see category.
    • I've used a construction laser for years. Far less expensive than the PuttAim laser.
    • True, but as 15 year olds go, he has a much better chance of getting there than any of the rest of them. Kid can flat out play. He almost Monday'd into a PGA tour event a few weeks ago too. Missed in a playoff.
    • I'd bet against him having much success as a pro, because of, you know… the odds. You don't want to be the best 15-year-old in the game. You want to be the best 25-year-old in the game.
