Yesterday I had a few lies that were side hill hard pan lies(30 yds & in).I didn't know how to play them. I tried to hit down on the ball. It came out to hot or I sculled it. What is thge CORRECT way to play this shot?

When i play a shot lying on a down hill slope on hardpan, i start by choosing a higher lofted club than i would for a shot lying on even ground, this is because having your backfoot higher than the ball will cause you to hit a lower harder shot that will roll farther.

you need to try and angle your shoulders so they are inline with the slope inorder to create the correct clubeface angle in relation to the ball, and also so you will not hit in thin/skull the shot.

when you are swinging down towards the ball feel your weight shift down the hill and focous on getting under the ball

To me this is one of the hardest shots in golf. Growing up in South Texas I have had to play off hard pan my whole life. Its not a problem when I have a full swing, I actually like it, but on 3/4 swings down its difficult. What works for me.....put the ball in the back of your stance and use as little wrist action as possible. If I focus on keeping my head still I usually can make clean contact with the ball first and hit a solid shot. It also helps to have at least one sandwedge with very low bounce. Especially if you play on a lot of coursed with hard pan. I have a 61 degree with 4 degrees of bounce that makes it much easier.

The first thing you have to understand about a hard pan lie is that even with solid contact the ball will come out much lower than normal. Since the club tends to bounce off the ground it is hard the get under the ball and get it in the air. If you try to scoop it or help it in the air, you will end up sculling it or blading it.

It's important to hit the ball first with a slightly descending blow. Play the ball back in your stance slightly, with your hands ahead to help ensure you contact the ball first. Allow for some run out, as the shot will come off low and hot, as you described. It's not that hard a shot to hit, but your options are limited, and you have to use good judgment and take what the course gives you in this situation.

Close your eyes and pray.....

Seriously, depending on what is in front of the green, I would go to a 7 or 8 iron and basically try a 30 yard chip. Pick the ball clean and let it run onto the green.

I play the ball up in my stance when I have these types of lies--and since it's 30 yards and in, I would use my 58.

i have to deal with these lies alot. its really hard to get alot of loft so i shoot for more of a pitch and run shot, play it back in your stance so you make sure you dont skull it, also ive found that if your using a hard distance ball its alot harder.

I play in Texas and at my club we have a lote of hardpan. As has been mentioned I have no problem with longer shots, trying to pick it clean isn't to difficult. Shorter shots can be. As a rule with my shorter shots, ball back in stance and try to accelerate through. You can actually get a little spin quite easily with chips and pitches off hardpan. I think a big part can be confidence, so try and find some hardpan at your course to practise these shots.

30 yards and in is a scary zone for me right now.

Add hardpan to it and I'm really fearful.

There were some great tips already given. I'll try some of them next time.

To the OP...at a 33 handicap, and if there are no bunkers in the way, I'd try this. If you are 30 yards from the pin, then you are probably not 30 yards from the green. If its hardpanned and not over 10 yards from the green, why not try putting with your hybrid? It is just one more option. It is also an option that may not give you a tap in one putt. But it is almost garunteed to get you on the green. When the pressure is on in a match, sometimes I go with this shot just to ensure no big numbers.

Depends on the situation. As noted above, chipping and putting are alternatives depending on what is front of the green. I will only hit down on it hard if it's a relatively long pitch. For short, delicate pitches, I play the ball in mid stance and try to slide a 60 degree wedge with minimal bounce under the ball. This last shot is difficult and requires concentration, good technique, and a very modest backswing. And lots of practice.

If you have the right amount of lag you will still hit the ball in the center of the face you will just have a different feeling after impact. Fix your lag and you'll hit it better.

Play the ball back in your stance hands forwards feet close together and slightly open with the weight forward in your front foot and at 30 yards a partial swing wedge making sure you commit to the shot hitting the ball first, making sure you accelerate through the ball, the ball will travel low and roll up to the green.

Also, I think it will usually come off with a little more spin if you manage to hit it clean. It will spin if the hardpan is sandy or grainy at all, at least, maybe not if it's just packed down dirt.

    • Been a bit of delay in updates but I needed to come back east as my mom's health has taken a serious turn for the worse. In a 3 day span we learned she had a tumor to she has stage 4 cancer and stopped eating and drinking for the most part. She has had a rough 3 months but certainly didn't think we'd be at the point of setting up hospice for her. My mom was never into any sports really other than following the Red Sox because my dad was a big fan. She always cared about what we were involved in including asking about how golf went.  I have kept up with my 5 minutes of daily practice and will go to the gym here in NH tomorrow morning. Despite the somber nature of this trip my family has commented more than a few times about my weight loss so it's important to me to keep it up. I know my mom always wanted us happy in whatever we did so I'll continue with my fitness journey keeping that in mind.
    • Day 109- Putting drills on a putting green for 20 minutes.
    • Day 252: did a stack session. Did some slow rehearsal swings during breaks.
    • Day 82: 3/18/24 Tried a Stack session but could not certify my warmup. Finished with indoor chips and putting.
    • Day 96 (18 Mar 24) - Continued work with the Divot Board with the GW and hard foam balls.  Focused on small target/small miss…setup to hit target about 30yds out - success if it hit within 6’ circle of target, fail if outside.  Had decent success averaging about 3 out of 4 (hitting in groups of four).
