You experts may say there is something more drastic going on with me, and let me tell you I welcome any constructive suggestions.

Me..
I am 40, 6'2 240lbs ( overweight) and somewhat active.

I been struggling very hard to hit my driver or 3wood. 7 years ago, I picked up golf and played maybe 20 rounds before getting frustrated and stopping. Last year in summer played 4 more, not much better.

I decided to join local course ( before playing ) and played 3 rounds took 4 lessons and the more I play, the worse my slice was getting. FRUSTRATION! Never could I hit my driver over 200 yards, but even then, ball flight was bad slice. Ball would leave straight, then go very high and take hard right. 3 wood was equal flight pattern. 5 wood would go high and fade to right, but in this short tight course I joined, it was only thing I could keep in play and hit 160 yards. My divots with irons were straight or slight inside out ( and I felt I wasn't getting club face on long clubs square at impact)
5 iron and down, was pretty good and for my limited play.

So watching honda classic yesterday, they were talking about grip (baseball, overlapping ect) and suggested that if you wanted a powerfade, to interlock pinky. If you faded, you could use baseball grip. Basically moving right hand down an inch would give your right arm leverage on the club. I know I oversimplified what was said.. but that is the way I interpreted. Also a friend suggested I move the ball back in my stance. I had been moving it further forward in effort to give me more time to square the driver at impact.

So in my yard ( which is 155 yards across) I tried baseball grip with limited flight balls and WOW! was hitting much straighter. I hit over 100 balls with encouraging results. After battling slice, couldn't wait to hit course. So first tee box playing a scat ( Im a D player) I took a nice easy cut, rotated hips and arms through impact and 237 yards straight as an arrow!!! ( not a lot of distance to some of you, but wow, my heart lept)

During play today I gps'd every single drive, and with exception of one pull hook ( was ugly ) and one fade, into rough on right, I hit every single fairway from 199 yards to 244 ( wind ) and hitting my 3wood ( still with a fade, but not nearly as bad ) 200yds. Only missed 2 fairways on relatively tight short course.

With my irons, I still used interlocking pinky, but baseball grip on long clubs.

I will say, when using the baseball grip with irons ( just yard testing) I do have to line up further right. The ball draws back to left and disparsity is wider than using interlocking grip on irons.

So for you guys who may have better understanding then I do, what do you think? Should I continue this grip difference between irons and woods/driver, or try baseball grip with every club?

There are so many things that can cause a slice. I would highly recommend uploading a swing so people aren't giving you random suggestions that may actually hurt your swing more. When you upload your swing, let me know and I'll have a look.

I use the interlock grip and have no problem hitting it straight when my swing is working properly. I would not advice trying to fix a slice by changing the grip. If the ball starts out straight and spin to the right, the clubface is open. This could be because of a bad grip or maybe coming too early with the hands. In my case, it was both, when I get those right, it's going straight.

Still, don't try to fix a problem with any solution you find. First you find out what's causing the problem, then try to fix that problem, not everything else.

Howdy!!!!

It is good to hear from someone living in Greenville, NC!!!!!!

I really miss the place at times.

What course are you playing????

I golfed a few of them around there when I was living in Greenville.

I also heard Johnny Miller discussing the various grips. I have to fight to keep my right hand from taking over and hooking the snot out of it. I can do this with any grip, it seems.

I started playing on my own and just went to the interlock naturally....er...unnaturally it seems.

The biggest 'anti-slice' move that I heard Johnny Miller discuss yesterday was (for right handers) have then right palm pointing more downward at impact. Keep your normal grip and try this.....I assure you that you'll trap the ball and get it moving more leftward as a result.

I've got a 10:08 tee time this morning and plan on getting there about 8:30 to hit some warm up balls and try this move a bit more. I'm working on taking a more square stance to the target (I stand too closed) and swinging more inside-out with the right plam more downward at impact. Should produce a draw.

Is there a reason to avoid the baseball grip?

Yesterday on par4's , I hit driver -then 7i or less into greens and it was a beautiful thing ! So much nicer than 5wood , 5wood then wedge taking 3 shots to reach green that I've been suffering through.

I posted this thread as a thinking it may help someone having trouble with chronic face open at impact as I was since it seemed to have allowed me to squared face of my long clubs.

Im hoping its a viable solution for me and not just a bandaid. No doubt most use an overlapping or interlocking grip (as I was taught and had always used) but is their a compelling reason for me not to use it ?

Not at all, you can use any grip you want, it's the idea of changing the grip to correct a problem I dont fancy.

Howdy!!!!

I joined up at Farmville Country Club 220-230 yard tshots seem to play best from white tees at this course. It was designed with lots of trouble at 250 yards ( overfly doglegs, ditches, and ponds) The only thing that has worked for me with interlocking grip was to close the face at address a substantial amount. I could everynow and then hit a straight shot, but it was inconsistant. At various times, I gone from weak, neutral, to such a strong grip my right palm was almost facing up at impact, but nothing has consistantly helped. In my case having the right hand with more leverage seemed ( at least for yesterday ) to cure. Playing again today in a scat at 10 so hoping it continues. My thinking is to go with baseball grip for now and enjoy playing until something pops up ( like a pull hook or ?) Right now, if its going straight, have confidence and having fun, Im just going to play awhile like this. If pulls or inconsistancy comes back in, will then move hand to overlapping grip or back to interlocking.

The baseball grip is so new, it feels a bit unnatural. I only tried it after watching what Johnny Miller said about its impact on ball flight. When I was 15, I broke both my wrists in motorcross wreck. Ive never thought it limited mobility, but in retrospect, I wonder if that could have had a negative effect on my squaring at impact?

Sweet.

Used to be a member at Farmville CC also. I worked in Wilson and lived in G-ville. Farmville CC was a great place to stop on the way home from night shifts......walk nine holes and clear my head.

Is Tom Braswell still the pro there? He really treated us very well.

That is a tight track for sure.....tight driving and small greens. Playing there will help your game a great deal. That first hole used to tempt me to hit driver to the green.....best scores were when I'd use 3iron off the tee, though.

Last time I played there must have been January of 1998. I heard the flooding reall messed up the back nine....I trust all is well now.

Man I miss that area sometimes.

ECU grad in 1992 and my wife graduated in the classes of 1990 and 1991. Go Pirates!!!! Hope we can keep Skip for a while.

You are so right.

230 off the tee from the white tees and you are in great shape on any hole out there. Once my buddy and I became more proficient with our drivers, we back up and usually played the back tees. Doing so seemed to back us off the trouble while allowing us to hit driver a lot. We benefitted from the longer irons and 7 woods on the approaches. We both used that track as a warm up and practice facility for our monthly gold league outings with work. The golf league events were played on a much more open course than Farmville CC. Ah....good old Farmville. I still remember the second and third holes used to eat my lunch. I hated forced carries.....still do.

Sweet.

I never met Tom, its Mike Hooks now. I've started playing every morning with Jack, Jim, Tom Jr , Brian, Reed, Donnie, Ed , T ect Usually 15 or 16 for 4 teams of 4 ( 3bucks overall scat)

#1 is drivable for you long hitters... I do use driver but then left with 50-70yards to green #14 Is 336 yards from white, and if you go over trees you can drive the green.... Back nine still gets soggy in rains but I score better due to its larger greens and more open play. Hitting it 230 will leave you 8i or less into most all par 4's
You are so right.

Im using a distance ball, and yesterday got some drives in 240ish range and drove straight down the middle into ditch on #8

I don't mind the forced carries as much as getting penalized for hitting straight/long off tee. (which is very new concept to me) I'm concerned with balls traveling further in summer months, getting me in trouble on many holes with driver. Oh well, I like having that problem more than having to hit from adjacent fairway back through trees (which is what I've been doing ) Curious, If you play on white tees, can you back up to blacks on few holes or do you have to stay on same tee throughout? What is your name? Do you ever get back up this way?
