I have the Taylor Made Tour Burner driver. It has the Fujikura RE AX Stiff Flex 60 shaft.
I have learned that this shaft is too incosistent. To prove that, I have switched drivers this week. I have went to the Callaway IQ driver with a Fubuki Stiff Flex shaft.
The club pro wanted to show me some type of flex test in the pro shop with the Fubuki shaft and the taylor made shaft.
We did some type of bounce test with both of the drivers. The bounce on the Fubuki shaft was the exact same number every time. It read 265. My Taylor Made shaft was different everytime. We did both shafts 5 times. He explained that the factory Taylor Made shaft was cheaply made, and was not going to be consistent.
I really do hit the Taylor Made shaft further. 30 yards further. But, I hit alot more fairways with the Fubuki, I am not happy with the Fubuki due to lack of distance that I am used to. So, how do I get my distance back that I know that I can produce, and still keep the consistiency of the Fubuki?
Any suggestions please...

Cole

The stock shaft is going to be higher launching than the Fubuki. How's your launch angle? Are you losing distance due to lower trajectory?

I have the Fubuki in my FT-9 and I feel that right now I am losing a little distance as well. I use to play a Nike SQ with a Proto By U shaft and I found that way longer than this shaft. I find if I don't hit it perfect is where I lose most of my distance. Once it gets nicer out up here I am going to hit a launch monitor and what the problem is. Until then I guess I just deal with the longer irons into greens.

This is an interesting topic, because right now im inbetween the ft-iq tour and 909 d2. Do either of you know why your losing distance? Is your ball fight alot more different than it was with your older driver? Or is it that your struggling and or the cold weather is getting to you?

I am seeing that the trajectory of the ball flight is very simular with both clubs. I did notice that the Burner is a 10.5 degree and the IQ is an 11 degree.
I wonder if I were to go to a 9.5 or a 10.5 degree head in the IQ, would it get me a few more yards?

The Burner shaft is atleast an inch over standard which will give you more distance because of the extra shaft length. I would try using the callaway with a 46" shaft. You probably wont lose much control because its one of the striaghtest drivers on the market.

IMHO, keep the Fubuki. You can do a few things:

1) Get on a launch monitor or trackman that can give you feedback on ball flight, launch angle, spin rate, etc. See which number can be improved the most.

2) Find the exact CPM of the shaft that works for you. Remember, all shafts are not made the same and sometimes you will find flex variations within the same shaft type. For example, one Fubuki can play stiffer than the other even though both are listed as "stiff." The reason being that there is a range of CPM within each flex. Some are soft stiff and some are borderline X stiff. Find which one works for you. You should find that on a trackman or a Max Labs Launch monitor. They will give you that information.

3) You mentioned the CPM on the Fubuki was 265. Perhaps you can get it tipped to play a little softer. This will allow you to bend the shaft more and give you some distance that you are losing. Also, FWIW, see if you can get your shaft, pured. This will allow your shaft to have consistent playing characteristics. Some people don't believe in it. Try finding a shaft that has been and test the difference for yourself.

Hope this helps.

Thanks a million for your replies.

This week I have also put the Speeded shaft into the IQ head. Same results as the Fubuki shaft. Still shorter than the Burner.

I like the idea of adding an inch to the shaft. I may try that.

I will also get on the Trackman.

What does it mean to get the shaft tipped, to play softer?

Thanks,

Cole

Some shafts can be "trimmed" or "tipped" by shaving the end. Depending on the clubfitter, he can do this for you where the club will play softer, meaning a little less stiff. Trimming the tip an inch or so will decrease the CPM by 10. This will make your shaft go from 265 to 255 on a frequency machine. It will still be a stiff shaft, albeit "softer" and probably allow you to bend the shaft more. By being able to bend it, you should pick up some of the lost yardages you are experiencing.

Again, though, find a reputable club fitter where he can take the time to go through every nuance with you and allow you to test different shafts. Also, take a look at a video that was posted on the Golf Equipment side. It's a Tom Wishon video and he explains this process in much greater detail.

If I'm not mistaken, tip-trimming makes a shaft stiffer. How do you tip a shaft to make it softer?

Generally, this is 100% correct. However, an experience club fitter can do the same to make it softer. I'll find the link and post it.
