When I have a shot from 50 yards and closer the ball always rolls really far...usually to the other side of the green. I'm working on my distance control but what should I do to put more spin on the ball around the greens to get it to stop or roll back (using Taylormade golf balls)?

super clean grooves, downward strike on the ball, hit the ball solidly, firm wrists at contact, abruptly halt the follow through (without decelerating through impact)

just make sure you hit the ball before the ground consistently and you'll be putting plenty of spin on it in no time. might want to consider changing your ball if you want these results sooner. depending on what model you have, taylormade's aren't the best beginner's balls

Try putting the ball further back in your stance and keeping more weight on your front foot. Hit ball then turf and don't be scared of taking a divot!

Haha, someone starts a "how do I put spin on the ball" thread every 9-10 days or so on this forum. Next time try putting "backspin" into the search engine.

Why would you do this? What difference does it make if it happens after you strike the ball?

it affects the trajectory. The flight is obviously going to be different if you stop your follow through at your hips rather than over your head.

You say you have a 4.2 but yet half your scores are in the 80s...

No... it's not obvious to me.

What you are talking about is after the ball is struck. I could do cartwheels after the ball is struck and leaves the club face. Usually I throw my club and curse. What difference does it make? As far as I can tell, it only makes a difference if you accomplish this by decelerating prior to impact. Buy Jay-Bird said specifically not to do so. Tim

He could shoot in the 90s, but your better rounds determine your handicap.

No... it's not obvious to me.

Try this: hit a ball and finish low with the clubhead no higher than your waist. Then hit a ball and finish with the clubhead and shaft above your head. To get to those spots

after impact, the club has to do certain things at impact. That's what matters. Finishing high makes the ball go higher and vice versa for low. When I finish lower with my wedges on 50 yard shots, I generally get some spin. To the OP, I think you'd be better off trying to control the trajectory of your shots rather than spin. Most high handicapers have more trouble with spin.

To get to those spots

Right. You are confirming exactly what I have been saying. It only makes a difference if you accomplish a short finish by doing something different prior to or at impact.

What Jay-Bird is saying, abruptly halt the follow through (without decelerating through impact) , doesn't make any sense to me. This might be an issue of "cues" vs. "reality." He probably does decelerate through impact but it helps to tell himself not to. Tim

What you do after the strike actually is just an indicator for what happens before impact. However, to human instinct, it tends to work. If I need to hit a low full shot and finish at my hips, I could go to full swing in my back swing and chop it off early after impact (however, dangerous due to the handsy flip) and my results will be a low shot. If I chop off that follow through with my chips and pitches, I expect the trajectory to come out higher due to me lofting the club more through the strike, caused by... you guessed it, flipping the wrists earlier which ends up.... chopping off the followthrough. This is more of a feel move (or description) than a technical move and you can't compare it technically.

For $15 you can get the Frogger ClubPro brush. It's absolutely awesome. Deep, clean grooves lead to more spin, and the brush cleans it like nothing.

Also watch Tim Herron hit a wedge shot. That's what your supposed to do to stop the ball.

I guess you don't see the 73, two 72s, 71, and 70.

Cool you know how to use a calculator. I'm just saying I wouldn't personally post my handicap at a 4 and then decide to flaunt my scores in the 80s.

He has to, because if he posts only his good scores, ignorant people (ie. you) would wonder why he is a 4.

JMO: It may have something to do with what kind of wedges you play. I played titleist vokeys last year and those grooves will make a well hit ball back up a good ten feet after landing. But, I switched to the cleveland cg 12s this year. They make the ball hit and stick like a lawn dart.

Practice is usally the best way to get the ball to do what you want it to anyway.
