Hi Guys,

I'm trading my new R9 420CC Stiff for the new R9 460cc with X-Stiff or Stiff F1 Motore coming out before the end of the month. My swing speed averages 112 to 115 and average about 280-290 off the tee. My bad tendency from when I started playing golf is that I can duck hook the ball.

I've seen on this forum and on others that some people fix their duck hook by getting an X-Stiff. Some golfers say the duck hook is using too much hands and close my clubface too early which makes total sense.

Question: Will a X-Stiff cure a duck hook or should I stick to a Stiff Flex and just work on not releasing the club too early? In other words, get the equipment to adjust to my swing or adjust my swing to the equipment?

Thanks!
e

@ that clubhead speed you should definately be using an xstiff. i wouldnt say it will cure your duck hook but it should help. using a shaft that is too flexible will only take your bad swings and make them worse matt

My standard caveat......I am not a teacher, nor do I play one on tv!

When I see your swing speed and hear "duck hook" all in the same sentence, my first thought is that you're likely over-swinging and often releasing too early. Before changing shafts, I'd personally consider ramping my swing speed back to the 100mph range and working to gain some consistency rather than trying to swing for the fences. Ask yourself, would you rather be a 12 handicap that sometimes hits it 300 yds, or 5 handicap that hits it 260 right down the middle? With the former, you get to see some of the more interesting parts of the course.......with the latter, you get to take more $'s off your buddies!

Awards, Achievements, and Accolades

I recently had a similar dilemma, but for me it was going from a regular to a stiff shaft. My SS is around 95 average, and I was also prone to the "duck hook".

The stiff shaft has definitely helped, although I am still fully capable of hitting a snapper with the new driver, but they are not quite as violent. I am working on hitting a nice fade which I find is much easier to control but with a loss of distance. I could hit a draw out there maybe 250-260 but when 1/4 was a 140 yard snap hook into the trees or worse its just not worth it.

First two times out with the new driver I shot 89 and 83, which was (and still is) my personal best.

I have a swing speed at 108MPH for my drivers .

But i dont use stiff or x stiff shaft .

I am using a UST PROFORCE V2 R 65 gram , cut the tip to make it between R & S flex (actually it is almost Stiff) . Love it .

On average i m driving 275 yards ( swinging 85% of my strength ) on the fairway and on some really good day ( 100 % ) , i can hit about 290 to 310 y .

I was talking to a clubfitter yesterday who recommended the same thing. I'm at 110 mph and he thought I should go with the Grafalloy Pro Launch Red. Which do you think is better?

The reason i chose Proforce V2 bcoz of the medium ball flight. What kinda ball flight that you are looking for ? Best is talk to the clubfitter.

I don't want to hijack the thread, but I'm looking for a mid-to slightly high ball flight--I don't have a lot of wind to deal with here in Pennsylvania and the higher flight helps me work the ball a little more with all of the doglegs on the courses around here.

I do agree though, find a good clubfitter and ask them. The ones I know will talk your ear off!

My average ball speed is 50 m/s (is that possible?).
