I am currently, and have for the past 13 years, using Titleist DCI gold Oversize + irons. Would it be an upgrade to buy a set of Titleist AP1's? Has iron tech changed that much in 13 years? If I was going to look, what other irons around the $600 range would I look at? I assume I would be looking at "game improvement" irons. My current handicap is 13-14.

You need to hit the new irons to determine if they are "better". For what it is worth, my irons are 1994 models. I love them and have no plans of upgrading to a newer iron. If you hit your irons poorly, I say take a few lessons before spending money on new irons.

holy shnikes!! has tech changed?? well...13 years ago we were all watching movies at home on VHS. Just think of it like that. Same goes for irons. for $600 you can pretty much get anything you could want.

My handicap is similar to yours, so one option i recommend you is the set i play with: Titleist 755. You can find them for a very good price, they are quite new, look great, and are not very demanding. as they are forged, treat them well or....dings.

In my bag:
Cleveland DST Tour 9.5 Diamana
Callaway Diablo Tour 15º

Callaway Razr 5 wood
TaylorMade Tour Preferred 3-PW
Callaway Forged 56º, Titleist Vokey 58º

Do you really think iron tech has changed that much? How so?

Technology in irons hasn't changed at quite the same rate as technology in woods.

I could dig out my 962b irons and play just fine, I think. P.S. I take that back. The "I think" part. I played with them earlier this year and, except for the grips I haven't changed in over a decade, they were fine.

Iron tech as improved in the amount of forgiveness you can get. On newer irons the groove size has got bigger which in turn will give you more spin. New irons may help I recommend you look at a less know brand like Nickent or the Adams a3 irons which come with 3-5 hybrids.

I agree. My set was made in 1994. I sought them out because they were what I wanted. Price had nothing to do with it. Big Berthas are very forgiving. Whether made in 1994 or 2009. Biggest difference is the price and the new ones have the shiny finish of course. I wanted the golds. Basically the same clubs from what I can see yet they were made 15 years apart. You can only re-invent the wheel so many times. With woods, sky seems to be the limit. One driver, 8 shots. Ha ha ....

I'm sorry, but I'm a firm believer in technology and I DO believe that iron tech has changed. CG, forgiveness, etc... Perhaps the way clubs are made are the same, but there's a lot more thought that goes into it now.

i think that it would definitely be an upgrade form your old irons and you would definitely see improvements in your games if your ge these new irons. the technology has changed so much over 13 years. 13 years ago all you could get were cast cavity back irons or really unforgiving muscle back blade irons. now you have got the option of weighting in the sole with taylormade burner irons and different types of grooves.

with the money your willing to pay i would suggest going for the ping i10's they have the game improving technology like the g10's and Ap1 but lots of pros also use them. if angel cabrera uses them then im sure they'll do wonders for your game.

Despite the hype, and the introduction of new and improved clubs every 34 days for the past decade, I don't see much change in iron technology. Sure, you can spend more, and buy something with bizarro graphics on the back, but put a decent swing on the ball and your DCIs work just as well as the AP1s and AP2s.

    • Ok, I'm trying to find a feel to hit a consistent ball flight (irons).  My current predicament.  1. I try to do the arms down stuff better, with the club feeling like it is way behind me more. It's just a cluster of results. Most of the time, I can't get any speed on the swing. If I get my arms down faster, I just throw them out.  2. I focus all my attention on turning better. Pushing off with my left leg and getting my right side through better. On the DTL view, this doesn't produce anywhere close where the hands and club should be. The result is usually ball first contact, lower ball flight, more centered contact.  At this point, I am going with option 2. Stop thinking about what the hands do. Just make a shorter backswing, keep it wide, turn through. Somehow, the club head finds the ball. My focus is so much on just making sure I turn, it's like, "Oh, that contact was better.... Oh, that bell flight looks playable." If not, I will just be practicing my entire summer.
    • Nope, they spent too much money. They are in over 28 million on the football roster and related NIL compensation at this point. Boosters associated with any Texas college football team has HUGE sway. The AD is between a rock and a hard place. They put a lot of money into Sorsby, at the chance of winning a NC this year. If you move on, you basically wasted a lot.  This is why Ohio State wants 3 QB's they feel can start. That is why the backups the past 5 years at some point transfer. Texas Tech has no backup near the quality of Sorsby. If they move on, they are screwed for 2026.
    • Maybe there's something I still don't understand about the situation. Wouldn't Texas Tech do itself a favor to move on from Sorsby at this point?
    • Day 281 6-10 Full swing, fast, getting low point ahead of "towel".  Working on flow during this seems to help.
