I took a lesson last night. This morning I played a quick 9 at my favorite local municipal course. The entire lesson was spent working on drills to hit my driver straighter. I still have a little bit of a slice. My drives went from 200 and often times in the wrong fairway to left edge of the fairway (just off) and about 250-260 from the tee (guessing) The problem was that I wasn't turning my wrists over before impact. They showed a video of my swing with a driver and one of my iron shots and my irons and the difference was incredible. After we worked on some drills (taking short half swings and trying to hit the ball with the toe of the driver) I started to draw the ball at my lesson. I couldn't reproduce that on the course today, but I was able to get consistent with my driver and more range time I think I could add that as a usable club. With 3 three putts I shot a 'bogey golf' 45. I had a chip in for birdie on the 7th, and even with that, and an up and down on 4; I still had 18 putts.

I need to work on chipping (inside of 20 yards) and putting alot more. I think with practice, I have a 42 in me yet this year at that course.

I realize that in the grand scheme of things a 45 on a local municipal course isn't a big deal, but it was my season long goal, and the season still has several months of playable golf. The worst part is that now that I have shot a 45, I am already looking at how I can improve.

In my bag:

some golf clubs

a few golf balls

a bag of tee's some already broken the rest soon to be

a snickers wrapper (if you have seen me play, you would know you are not going anywhere for a while)

and an empty bottle of water

Good job.

If a 45 is a big deal to you, it is a big deal!

45 is a big deal, especially if it's your first time playing bogey golf for 9 holes. The number of 3-putts should be reassuring: it's something you more or less know how to fix and what to practice to prevent, and thus that 45 could be a 42 before too long

Either way, congratulations.

yes, its the first time I have ever shot bogey golf. I have shot 10 over a few times at a local executive course, but shooting a 42 at a par 32 isn't as rewarding as shooting a 45 at a par 36. Yes, I am going to see the same pro that pointed out the problems with my driver to talk to him about the problems with the flat stick next. I figure know that I know how to use every one of the 14 clubs, I should start working on getting better at them, and that means starting at the putting surface and working back to the tee box.

as for your comment that the 45 could be a 42 without the 3 putts. My short game in general is a bit of a problem, on several holes I was very close (inside of 20 yards) from the green, and failed to get up and down to make a par. for instance, on the difficult 400 yard par 4 2nd, I was next to the green in two (driver, hybrid) and carded a double after I chunked the first chip, and hit the ground on the first putt which resulted in a 3 putt. The good news is that I see where I am leaving strokes on the course, and while I don't see par golf, in a perfect world, with lots of practice, I do see a 39. In my mind this means that I am starting to understand shot selection, and course management. I still, however need to work on shot execution.

good job... but just shooting 42 is selling yourself a bit short. hell, a couple weeks of putting and chipping will take you down at least 5 strokes.

Congrats!! To be honest, I'm pretty impressed. I say that because I know when I make a change, it takes a few days of practice to set in and be comfortable with it. I think that's awesome that you absorbed that lesson and immediately translated it to the course. Keep up the good work, and with some good practice, the scores will be coming down faster than Paris Hilton's underwear on ladies night.

update

I went back and played the course again today. I took another lesson last thursday and the day after was a disaster (54) but today's round I shot a 43. I had no birdies, but 2 double bogeys, 4 pars and 3 bogeys for an 7 over 43. I had one 3 putt, 2 up and downs. the next thing I need to work on is more GIR's. I only had 2 and one was on a short par 5 that I was off the back edge in two.

    • Day 549, May 4, 2024 After lessons and working with Natalie, hit some balls for awhile. Just backswing stuff. Forgot about the slightly shorter stuff, though I'm sure it was as they were only about 75% speed with brief pauses.

    • Best drive I've ever hit: I will not be answering any questions about the rest of the hole. Or the round, for that matter.
    • I tried hybrids way back when TaylorMade introduced the copper orange Firesole Rescue, the clubhead having been made of titanium which was still relatively new even in drivers back then. I couldn't hit it well at all, and while the success of hybrids suggests that the modern ones must be quite good,  I'm perfectly happy with the 5, 7, and 9-woods.  Early ones of mine were Top Flite Intimidator 400s made by Spalding... and also made of titanium, now that I think of it.  I still have them in my basement. I do bag a driving iron, but it's a one-trick-pony that never sees fairway use.
    • The last time I played Maxfli balls, Dunlop was still making them. How long ago was that? Mostly, though, I used to play Top Flites (original 336 dimple model) when Spalding was still making them. Now I play the Pro V1x. Last time that I ordered some, Titleist was still making them. Let's see how long that lasts.
