I'm swinging the club so fast right now I'm thinning and chunking like no one's business. Anyone have any good tips or drills for tempo, especially on the course? thanks.

I battle the same thing from time to time. It helps me to visualize a slow smooth backswing before I address the ball. It helps me give it a try.

anyone else? I was looking at tour tempo, the 1/3 concept sounds good, but I'm afraid to swing faster, because that's what I was trying to avoid.

I use a mantra. I really thought it silly at first, but once I found one that fit, it's really seemed to make a difference.

"Up.. Up.. and AWAY!" Is what I use now.

Give it a try. Certainly couldn't hurt! =)

think of hitting the golf ball like a tennis forehand. In tennis, you bring the racket back, then first slowly accelerate the racket forward as you load on the left side (righties), then whip through the hitting zone.

Do the same with the golf swing, as you shift weight forward, first slowly accelerate, then continue the acceleration through the hitting zone. Completing the follow through in a balanced position also helps to prevent overswinging.

when I take my backswing, I think about slowing down on the way back instead of speeding up. I heard somewhere that no matter how fast you go back, you always stop at the top before beginning the downswing, so why not think about a smooth, controlled backswing to a stop, then smoothly accelerating on the down?

I also count a slow 1-2-3 on the way back, and a 'go' or 'now' or 'yes' on the way down.

oh, and if i feel panicky (happens to me all the time), I step out of the shot before swinging and take deep calming breaths, reset.

A good way of keeping tempo with your body is this. Stand behind the ball and breathe normally. Get a sense of how long it takes for you to breathe in, and finish breathing out.

Step up to the ball, and as soon as you start the backswing, breathe in. You should be finished breathing out by the time you hit the ball and finish the swing. This will give you a good sense of tempo within yourself.

I hit the ball so much better when I use a 1-2-3 count for the backswing, and start the downswing at the beginning of the count of 4; the 4 is the same time increment as the 1-2-3 total. That gets me pretty much on that famous 3/1 ratio. Alternatively (with fairway shots) I may use a 1-2-3 then the word KISS for the downswing...that reminds me to let the club kiss the grass on the way through the ball. I can almost predict either a thin or fat shot if I hurry that downswing....sometimes I slow the downswing by counting 1-2-3 AND 4.

The ratio also works well for chipping and putting, although the pace of the 1-2-3-4 is faster than with the full swing. Sounds like I know what I am doing, but I am only recently learning about (and experiencing) the importance of tempo, mainly due to posts in this forum.

I use a one, two through approach.

Breathing really helps as well. It should come naturally though. You don't want to have to think about tempo...too many other things to think about.

I use tour tempo. It works for me. There are 3 different speeds on it. All are 3-1. There are 2 really slow ones and then the one you work up to. I just bought the tracks, not the books.

count 1,000 one, 1,000 two and 1,000 three and you should just finish your backswing.

I use the Tour Tempo mini player and it has helped me tremendously, I don't use it during the round but I've used it often enough that when my tempo gets off I can hear it in my head, and I use that to get my tempo under control.

Anyone on this thread who hasn't read the 'Tour Tempo' thread needs to.
This simple tone system can be ripped to MP3 and played on your iPod on the range.
Also, if you have an iPhone or 'iPod Touch' there is a 2 Dollar App that you can download that has the swing tones for some PGA Pro's on it.

    • I’m not sure I’m following you. My current plan is to take the bunkers out of play completely and hit something like a 6i to 130-150 range.
    • Day 139- Slow, swings with short practice club.
    • You might want to try a can of Bar Keepers Friend. Yes, it is abrasive, so just wet a sponge and dab it on. It has oxalic acid (no bleach like "Comet" kitchen cleanser), and it works wonders on stainless steel and other metals. Try it on a small area first to see what happens.
    • Fair   My uneducated thought: the big miss is the penalty area. If you want to optimize score, missing into the bunker (likely 5) is better than missing right into the penalty (possible 6). With that, your strategy seems sound and if you hit a committed shot, you get a bunker 5% of the time, take your medicine and hopefully get a putt for par but accept bogey. You may find yourself in a penalty situation 2-3% of the time and accept the associated outcome. The vast majority of the time though you are giving yourself a good approach shot into the green.
    • I walk 30 mins a day on my lunch break. It is not very intense (since i dont want to get sweaty in my work clothes), so just a touch above leisurely. 3 days a week I walk on the treadmill for 60 mins. I alternate the incline from 4 to 10 for a couple minutes, once every ten minutes. I lift my kettlebells nearly everyday. I have a couple complex routines. I find just 15 minutes and my heart rates is elevated
