I'm trying to slow my swing down so that I can more properly accelerate through the hitting zone, achieve all of the necessary & appropriate swing actions, and stay more in balance while doing so. Though, I'm having severe difficulties in accomplishing a slower paced swing. When I produce practice swings, no issues. But with the ball in place for me to swing through, I feel the need to swing aggressively. Something in me takes over and I end up producing a swing that is too fast from beginning of the top position. My problem most likely stems from the the many years of wanting to improperly lunge down and hit the ball.

Has anyone else had this problem and been able to overcome it? Any advice and/or drills are much appreciated.

Thanks in advance,

Mark

Yikes, tell me about it. I am going through the same transition. I'm noticing that you just have to trust your swing. I take a few "back and forth, back and forth" practice swings really trying to feel what my body is doing during those swings. I immediately step up and repeat those same feelings as they are fresh in my mind.

I have never had this issue, but I've got a suggestion. Vijay Singh suggests you time your swing by saying "seventeen" as you swing. Give it a try...

I assume you're talking abotu the top of the backswing where you turn into your downswing. That's the key to a good golf swing for me, my tempo. The way I do it is just treat it as I were throwing a ball. You dont' just bring your hand back and snap through before it gets there right? Try using the thought to toss the ball. My 2-3 practice swings are small swings only focused on getting my tempo right. If I'm really off, I'll just take my right hand and bring it up to my ear and pretend to toss an underhand ball. How do you hit the ball harder? the same way you would throw the ball harder, not snapping or jerking through, but accelerating smoothly. (ps, make sure you're moving through to the target the same time you start the toss.)

Sounds more like your trying to hit the ball when you get up to it then making a good swing.

A quote from Kris
...is that college bball really isn't "lower tier". The better teams have their rosters filled with guys who could play in the NBA. hell, guys used to come straight from high school to the NBA. I really don't think there's much of a difference skill-wise between the two.

While hunting around the internets for homemade training aids I found something that helps me feel a pause at the top of my backswing. Take a gym sock or head cover and put 3 or 4 golf balls in it and swing it with a smoothe, deliberate motion. At the top of your backswing the balls in the sock/headcover should hit your left shoulder (for a righty), then start your downswing. When you finish the swing they should hit your right shoulder. If you do it properly there will be a slight delay from when your reach the top of your backswing to when the balls actually hit your left shoulder. This should give you that feeling of having a slight pause at the end of the backswing. If you rush it or do this too quickly you'll hit yourself in the back of the head with a sock full of golf balls. You'll learn the right tempo quickly enough unless you like giving yourself a good thrashing.

Stop trying to hit the ball.

When you practice swing there's no ball there. Swing the club. The last time: swing the club where the ball is.

Stop trying to "hit" the ball; swing the club.
I make all my own clubs:

    • Day 10 (10 Jun 26) - Played in the midweek shootout at my home course - on aerated and sanded greens - day of trying to figure tempo to get the best roll on the greens.  Approach game was decently solid as was shots off the tee.
    • Ok, I'm trying to find a feel to hit a consistent ball flight (irons).  My current predicament.  1. I try to do the arms down stuff better, with the club feeling like it is way behind me more. It's just a cluster of results. Most of the time, I can't get any speed on the swing. If I get my arms down faster, I just throw them out.  2. I focus all my attention on turning better. Pushing off with my left leg and getting my right side through better. On the DTL view, this doesn't produce anywhere close where the hands and club should be. The result is usually ball first contact, lower ball flight, more centered contact.  At this point, I am going with option 2. Stop thinking about what the hands do. Just make a shorter backswing, keep it wide, turn through. Somehow, the club head finds the ball. My focus is so much on just making sure I turn, it's like, "Oh, that contact was better.... Oh, that bell flight looks playable." If not, I will just be practicing my entire summer.
    • Nope, they spent too much money. They are in over 28 million on the football roster and related NIL compensation at this point. Boosters associated with any Texas college football team has HUGE sway. The AD is between a rock and a hard place. They put a lot of money into Sorsby, at the chance of winning a NC this year. If you move on, you basically wasted a lot.  This is why Ohio State wants 3 QB's they feel can start. That is why the backups the past 5 years at some point transfer. Texas Tech has no backup near the quality of Sorsby. If they move on, they are screwed for 2026.
    • Maybe there's something I still don't understand about the situation. Wouldn't Texas Tech do itself a favor to move on from Sorsby at this point?
    • Day 281 6-10 Full swing, fast, getting low point ahead of "towel".  Working on flow during this seems to help.
