I recently played a course that I've been wanting to play for quite some time. I was disapointed to see that the fairways and rough were a form of St. Augustin or something like it. What a mess, How the hell does a person hit out of that crap? It seemed to see me coming and would jump up and grab my club like hitting a bean bag. Everything would go way right, what a nightmare. Does anybody play this stuff regularly? How do you hit from it? I'd like to play this course again but need help.

That's a great question. There's one hole here at my home course that has St. Augustine grass on the side hill of the green to keep shots from going into the water if you land there. I've been there a few times over the years. What I do is play my 54* instead of my 60* and play a flop shot. It's worked out a few times for me. I'd take an extra club or 2 for the added thickness of it if I were you. The St. Augustine will grab the club and slow it down obviously therefore needing more club. Good luck bro. Hope it works out for ya. By the way..... all the houses down here have St. Augustine grass in our yards.

I played a course in Costa Rica ( La Iguana in Los Suenos and the fairways (I believe) were this type of grass (did a google image search and found pics of this grass). When it was cut short on the fairways it was great, very 'springy' and the ball launched nicely. The rough was tougher!

Don't mind the trucks but here's a pic of my old house's front lawn. This is pretty tall and was cut probably the next day. St. Augustine grass has big thick fat blades and the grass is pretty thick. Hope this helps out in some ways.

some courses use a form of Zoyzia grass. It looks like st augustine, but it is more tolerant of heat and needs less water.

You have to change you approach when playing from it. You have pick the ball more because the roots are very tough and they will grab the club and turn it over. You will also not hit the ball as far off of it for the same reason. So I take one more club and try to not take a big divot.

My swing thoughts:

- Negative thinking hurts more than negative swinging.
- I let my swing balance me.
- Full extension back and through to the target. - I swing under not around my body. - My club must not twist in my swing. - Keep a soft left knee

your shots were going right out of the rough?! I don't know what to tell you. When I hit out of heavy rough, usually the hosel gets grabbed first and causes the club to close to early so I just open it up a bit more. I mean the key out of any rough lie is get the club to the ball as best you can. Be it moving it back in your stance to get more steep, or chop into it like a flop or what not, it's gonna require creativity.

Yes, my shots were going right. I've never had fitted clubs and tend to stand a little more upright than most so, the toe tends to catch before the hosel has a chance to. Result....ball flight to the right.

St. Augustin grass, isn't that a nice name for crab grass?

In my back yard I get patches of that stuff, and I use a crab grass killer to kill it so I can plant regular grass.

In my bag:

some golf clubs

a few golf balls

a bag of tee's some already broken the rest soon to be

a snickers wrapper (if you have seen me play, you would know you are not going anywhere for a while)

and an empty bottle of water

and don't ignore the truck, it's a nice truck. What does Saleen do to make it a Saleen F150?
