My final fall semester at school begins on Monday, so I decided to book a round at my favorite course this afternoon for one last summer round. The weather forecast called for a 50 percent chance of rain, so it was basically a coin flip whether or not a storm would pop-up near the course. I left for the course after going to my campus to take care of a few errands at 1:00, under partly cloudy skies, and feeling confident that I would remain dry for the afternoon. As I get closer to my destination, though, I notice an ominous cloud forming directly above the course's location. Sure enough, I drive into a downpour less than a mile from the clubhouse, and it is raining very hard once I pull into the parking lot.

It's a spot shower with no thunder or lightning accompanying it, though, so play on the course is able to resume as soon as it stops raining. However, there is a long line of carts waiting at the first tee to take off. To make matters worse, there is a members' league playing that evening, so all other players must be off the front nine by 6:00. Therefore, the starter can't send groups to the tenth tee to relieve some course traffic. The starter sends groups off in foursomes; since I'm a single, I have to wait 30 minutes until I can be fitted in with another group. That other group turns out to be two very cute college girls. They might not be any good, I think, but they are attractive and my age. I can hardly believe my luck.

It is only fitting, then, that after exactly one stroke (a 4-wood down the center of the fairway) and not even enough time to strike up a conversation, a streak of lightning emerges from a cloud in the distance. Since this is a classy club that does not take any chances, the horn immediately blows, and rangers direct everyone back to the clubhouse. Since I've had a round at this course suspended at this course before, I know the club will wait until any sign of foul weather is out of sight before allowing play to resume, even if the far-off storm does not come any closer. It's 3:15; I'm looking at least at a 30-minute delay before the course opens again; there are numerous foursomes in front of me; and the front nine has to be clear in less than three hours. I know that if I stay, I won't be getting even nine holes in today. Girls or no girls, six or seven holes aren't worth the greens fee. Reluctantly, I take a rain check.

Sometimes, life isn't fair.

Yeah no kidding, you rolled the dice and crapped out man.

The good news is that you have a rain check and after your first round of exams, theres no better way to go blow off steam (and all that adderall) than a nice round of golf at what sounds like a good course.

That's good though, you have an opener now if you ever see them again, which you probably will at some point. And the opener is half the battle ;)
