i have been sick for about a week now and havnt played golf for about two weeks because of it. this is not like me i usually play about two times per week and go to the range twice. so i went out to play yesterday and i thought everything would be fine and it wasnt..i couldnt make good contact with the irons, my putting was a little off, i fixed my drive a few holes in and my short game was still fine. but it wasnt as fun as it usually is when i play good. looks like its back to the range for me to work on everything and tips for playing again after not playing

Good luck. Im sure using MP32s is not helping any right now. When I played forged MBs I couldn't take more than a week or two off without some sort of issues.

I don't know how old you are, but being sick for a week can have a toll on the body. You probably aren't %100 just yet.

I sympathize with the being sick part and agree with the other poster that it could be your body isn't quite at 100%. I don't play very much at all, so I know about the layoffs. My advise is when you go to to the range, hit everything like a 3/4 knock-down shot until you feel yourself back in the groove. For me, it helps me focus on a solid downswing and contact. once you feel you are making good contact, then move up to the full swings. It shouldn't take that long to get it back. The last time I played I had taken 2 months off. It took me about 20-25 balls on the range to figure it out. You might just be trying too hard and/or tying to do too much when your body isn't ready.

I will judge my rounds much more by the quality of my best shots than the acceptability of my worse ones.

man that sucks, i feel you, and playing blades? i was horribly sick in august when school started and spent almost a week in the hospital. when i recovered and went out, it took me about a week to hit my blades again. good luck!

Think of it as an advantage when you want to try a new swing thought. When ever I lay off and do not play for a while, my weak hand, left hand or leading hand for right handers needs to be build up to hold the club while swinging, so I try to build the strength back up.

I also start with chipping and wedge practice to get my tempo back along with building muscle memory. I go out and hit PW on grass to build up the swing and my confidence.

I try to be realistic about my expectation after laying off and know that you will be off in your game and it only takes time and practice to get back to form.

Mate I have played golf about 3 times in nearly 2 months due to a back/rib injury (see pain in ribs post) and I shot about 10 shots over my handicap on my return after 6 weeks out, every club in my bag was off, next round was better only 3 shots off my handicap but still every club in my bag had issues, I just put it down to not hitting a ball for 6 weeks and the fact I am using new irons.
I am having my 1st mid week practice session in 2 months tomorrow to work on the new irons and get my driver back to what it was b4 the injury.

It is like any sport, you don't practice or play, you cant expect to play the same each week

At least you don't have to completely stop because of the winter. I won't play a round of golf again until late March.

    • My two cents? Don't. As a beginner that's interested in learning about the golf swing, you'll find yourself consuming a lot of information, most of which isn't even relevant to your own swing. You need to learn you can't think your way to a good golf swing. Focus on the one thing that you're working on and doing that on every swing, come what may. And remember, mishits happen.
    • Day 6 (7 May 24) - More work in the backyard focused on tempo in addition to setup.  Worked with 6 and 7 irons hitting hard foam balls - used the old MacGregor irons to mix it up a little.   
    • No! lol. But they have to be in the right sequence to play mid-handicap golf or little better. Mostly. And even in that there is range/margin for error in the motions and positions that most normal humans can handle. It helps if you have a decent idea of how a golf club moves around the body like you would any other equipment sports (baseball and hockey might be the closest) After all, fairways are 40 yards wide. Don't overthink it. Be diligent in getting basics right. I will concede that it is harder than it sounds but it certainly is not exact angle/exact position/exact degree of bend/exact speed/exact facial expression, etc, every.... single.... time or the result is horrible death. 
    • Looking to play in the Severna Park Golf league and it got rained out the first three weeks. I know the course is being renovated so it is not in great shape but the location is easy for me and I would love to meet some other golfers in my area. Anyone here in Maryland Annapolis area? 
    • I like to look at the positives.  Overall you are fairly consistent down the center with most shots 20 yards or less off center.  On most fairways that should be in play.  Sure, you had some very short duds, but also if you look there is a good cluster in the 110-125 yard range.  Sure, we would all like to be longer, but knowing your typical shot is more important than trying to hit the 7-Iron 175 Yards.  Just take more club for longer shots and do not worry about it.  Your distances may increase as you improve over time so do not get caught up on that now.
