The course I play on the most around here has six Par 5's, six Par 3's (and the rest Par 4's obviously).

What are your thoughts on a course like this?

It's 73.0/131 and 6904 yards from the black tees.
It's 70.0/126 and 6331 from the white tees.

The holes are (black/white yardages, course handicap):
  • #2 (Par 3 -172/165, 11) severely down hill. small green with bunkers on each side. not easy par.
  • #4 (Par 3 - 217/180, 15) big green. no bunkers. should make par.
  • #7 (Par 5 - 540/501, 3) uphill tee shot. drives dont go far. blind 2nd shot to green. takes a really big knock to reach green in 2. I've never done it.
  • #8 (Par 3 - 166/155, 17) uphill, guarded by front bunker. not too hard
  • #9 (Par 5 - 591/550, 1) not reachable in two except for the very long hitters. very narrow green has two tiers which makes approach shots really important. huge hazard to carry with 2nd shot.

  • #10 (Par 5 - 579/528, 4) not reachable in two for anyone. Cannot hit driver off the tee, which leaves you about 350+ to the green over two hazards. Not an easy birdie, but should be easy par.
  • #11 (Par 3 - 181/159, 18) slightly uphill with front bunker. average par 3.
  • #13 (Par 3 - 150/139, 16) average par 3. should be easy par.
  • #14 (Par 5 - 552/527, 8) never seen anyone reach it in two. If you hit your drive over 280 you're in the hazard. 4 large bunkers in front of the green. No chance to roll the ball up there on your 2nd shot.
  • #15 (Par 3 - 233/201, 14) tough hole. severe valley you have to carry. no chance to roll the ball up to the green. Huge bunker on right side. downhill and OOB on the left side.
  • #17 (Par 5 - 526/483, 10) reachable in two with a good drive. huge gully/hazard in front of green. very much a risk/reward hole.

There is a course that I play several times a year that is like that. I don't mind at all. The course has a great layout. It has a two reputations: you will use every club in the bag, and becuase of the hilly nature, every shot will have some sort of elevation change up or down. There is not a level shot on the course.

I wouldn't want to play a course where 4 of 6 par 3s are 150 yards and flat, or every par 4 is less than 400 yards, or every par 5 is reachable. I think as long as there is a bunch of variety, there is nothing wrong with a course having a 6-6-6 layout. It can be a nice change of place.

I will judge my rounds much more by the quality of my best shots than the acceptability of my worse ones.

Love the concept, more courses should be designed in this manner. There is only one course with this setup in the state of Texas. Luckily for me, it's just down the road. http://www.westridgegolfcourse.com/l...=158&page;=2503

There's a course near hear (Gus Wortham GC) that goes 5-5-5 consecutively. Very bizarre when I first played it.

i would love to play a course like that. i love par 5's and par 3's. the last time i played i had eagle putts on every par 5, but missed them all and made birdies instead. i bet if i had 6 par 5's i would've sunk ONE of them! hehe

I like the idea as a change of pace type course but I don't think I would play it all the time. I would think it would throw your handicap off a bit having that many par 5s. I guess you could make the argument that the par 3s offset it but I just think I would shoot lower scores on that type of course. I just feel that long par 4s keep a golfer honest.

Sound like a beautiful layout. A good work out for long hitters and enough par 3 holes to keep you on your toes. Here in West central Florida we have two types of courses. Flat and mid length and Flat and long.

It ain't bragging if you can do it.

When I was back in college, I had an internshp with ReedHycalog (drill bit company). The office I worked at was just around the corner from that course (Navigation and Wayside, by the railroad tracks), and a bunch of people would go play there all the time. I never got to go play it, but then again I was also worried if I did I'd end up getting shot.

uttexas mentioned a good course with this feature that's around here, site of my strangest golf moment. They have a long par 4, at least 445 where I cracked my tee ball OB, but still got a par by holing out from 180 yds out.

    • this topic brought to mind one my favorite golf-spectator memories. Back when, living in Santa Barbara CA, parked in my yellow cab just behind the 10th tee  (c. 380 yard par 4) at SB Muni golf course while eating lunch. A twosome comes by, and first up is this fat little mexican guy who takes a kinda squirelly practice swing, then addresses the ball and bashes a long, high, perfectly straight drive up to w/in about 5 yards of the green. Other guy is dressed to the 9's, pulls out what looks like a $300 driver....and hits a maybe 150-yard pop fly. Slams clubhead to the ground and yells, "it's fat! It's fat! Everything is fat today!!"  And that's how I learned what a "fat" shot is.
    • day 57. Technique practice in the net. Really trying to slow down.
    • It may not be surprising that in the previous 7,064 posts, this particular point has been discussed. To which I will counter: If we're talking about results, why only the majors? Unless you know something that I don't, neither of us are in any position to judge whether Woods or Nicklaus lived their overall life better, not that such a thing is even objectively measurable, nor is it relevant to the discussion.
    • As we've had to tell other people, the topic is which is the better GOLFER, not human being.
