I'm looking to travel near Williamsburg, VA for some summer golf and was wondering to those of you who live down in those parts what kinda weather to expect while I'm planning. I'm looking for the end of February to head down since I'm headin to Florida in the middle of March...Can any locals give me some info on the typical Feb weather? Any great courses? Any great places to eat in the area? etc...any help is great :) thanks

I live in Virgina Beach about 30 miles south of Williamsburg. I have played The Golden Horseshoe and Kings mill resort which has two courses. Highly recommend these courses. Highly recommend you get a Virgina Golf Association (VGA) playing card. It costs $65 dollars but you get to play the top courses in SE Virginia for just Cart fee. In February, you can expect temps to fluctuate wildly. It could be mild (Temps were in the mid 50's this past weekend) or very cold (25). I would say to expect temps to average in the low 40's during the day.

My grandfather lives down there, is a member at williamsburg CC...so I have a bit of an in but I was just looking for some other opinions about the area too. Thanks for your advice, HOPEFULLY we get it on the mild days...haha Anywhere else to play besides the Horseshoe and Kings Mill? I'm also going to be playing Ford's Colony b/c that's where the GPa lives...(I haven't seen him in over 13 years due to family issues) and I was also looking into Governor's Landing...how's that course?

The average high temperature in Williamsburg for late February is 55 degrees. You get into mid march and it's averaging 60. Of course it could be much higher or lower but the average is all you can go on for long term planning. I've played golf in January and February in shorts but it's a crap shoot this time of year. In March it usually starts to get consistently warm.

summer golf in feb? 60's in march?
ionno... but if i were you... id expect a wide range of temps that time of year... just a few days ago it was mid 60's and today it was 40°...
there are literally tons of courses here if you dont mind a lil bit of driving... id definately google the area you will be staying at and check every course with in your driving comfort zone...
i would highly recommend coming into va bch and checking a few courses out... like va national or the signature

Depending on where you are in the Williamsburg area, you may want to consider checking out our course (Albemarle Plantation). We're only about 45 minutes from Williamsburg and the temps are a little warmer cuz we're a little further south and not too far from the water. We aren't here to advertise, but you did ask. ;)

with regards to feb weather.....it's cold. I'm sure you're used to it being from PA, but I'm pretty sure this is going to be the coldest winter ever (which is funny because it will beat out last year's winter). As of yesterday, you could still easily find snow pile left from a 2-foot+ dumping of snow the week before Christmas. Today, we got just a bit over a foot. Since VA usually doesn't get this much snow, I'm sure the courses have had problems. We're scheduled to get more snow this week, and it wouldn't surprise me if we got one more big one in February. My guess is most of February will be highs in the lower 40s maybe, probably upper 30s. But, we almost always have a couple of unusually warm days per month (last week it reached 65.....today the high was like 21) so you might get lucky.

As far as golf is concerned, I haven't ever played in Williamsburg (I really don't know why....I guess a mixture of laziness and busyness) but all of my buddies have. The one you have to play is Golden Horseshoe - gold course. From what I hear, it's probably the best public course in the state. Other options are Kingsmill (River Course....home of big LPGA event and used to host a PGA tourney too.....is nice but I've heard people say they like the others just as much). Golden Eagle at the Tides Inn (one i have actually played) is nice in that it is deserted this time of year, but I think it's only a decent design and the conditions certainly could be better with their resources.....still kick's a muni's butt though and it's a really fun course overall). I would also recommend Royal New Kent, which is between Williamsburg and Richmond. Definitely the most unique course in the state. Americanized-Links course that is one of the toughest public course in the east. Bring a lot of golf balls. I played one of the most solid 9's of my life on the back and still shot 40 with a double on 18. Always crowded on weekends, but if you can stand a 5 hour+ round, it'll be worth it.

Food-wise.....Pierce's Pit BBQ is the way to go. Everytime I ever go to Williamsburg, I have to get it, even though it's a bit inconvenient to get to from the highway.

Have fun in my state!

I live in Virginia Beach on the weekends and the from Williamsburg south, there wasn't much snow accumulation this past weekend. Maybe about an inch, we got a lot of rain. There is another storm coming today and Wednesday that might bring some snow. If you plan on playing in Wiliamsburg at the end of February, just be prepared. for very cold weather. I doubt if it will get much above 40 degrees. The fairways will probably be hard as concrete..

    • I don’t measure my intake either. I generally have a black coffee, a bottle of soda, some sweet tea at home, and anything in between is water. An ice cold bottle of water is one of my favorite things. It feels like an immediate refresher for my body. I’ll admit that I need to drink a little more though.
    • For such a nice membership, there have been some bad incidents in the past few years.  We had someone voted out a couple of years ago over something he did and he harassed the board members for three months until he moved out of the area.   Generally they’ve tried to do things like tournament handicaps and identify certain people who they know should be lower and adjust it somehow.  I can understand not wanting to go thru something like the guy who was voted out again i emailed the pro who forwarded it to the handicap committee.  They are going to see what can be done.  I walked someone thru what happened and they are going to nudge him to post the score from the match and see what he does.  Since he didn’t put anything in the electronic scoring past 13, based on how he played 14 and 15 plus having to take bogey on 16-18 for after he left, he should post 83.  We’ll see if it’s even higher,   Since he was really even thru 13, then doubled 14 and parred 15 my guess is he really shot 75 being generous and giving him 2 pars and a bogey on the three holes he didn’t play.    i shot 88, getting 16 shots for my course handicap which is net even and I lost on 13.  We do brackets where handicaps should be within 4-5 of each other.  Most matches only have 1-2 shots as a difference between players  neither of us posted the score yet.  There was something in the match play rules about whether or not to post your score.  I couldn’t remember if we were supposed to or not.  I don’t think he was going to post that, because even with his inflated score it would be the lowest score in his recent 20. Lucky I didn’t because they want to see what he does post and they don’t want me posting so he can try to calibrate his score.
