Seriously, how can Tiger drive it so poorly?

I find it mind boggling that he is so far off line with his drives. Is it because he's trying to hit it 300? It seems like he should be able to just dial it back to 275-280 and keep it in the fairway and just deal with a little longer iron into the green for now.

It is the kind of misses you expect out of a 10 HDC not a PGA tour player. You'd expect him to be able to keep it in play and hit greens. He isn't even close on his bad ones.

They all miss as badly as 10 handicaps at times. Its just as difficult for them as it is for us. Just don't single out tiger for the bearer off all bad golf.

Oh, I know, which is one of the things I like about the Marquee Group coverage you get on DirecTV for majors - you get to see every little thing they are doing. But some of those drives - especially the one (was it at Pebble Beach) where he hit probably a 80 yard hook are unfathomable to me.

I'm not sure they all miss as badly as I do. Maybe I am particularly wild but I've never seen many tour players other than tiger and phil hit a 50 yard push, a shot I am really good at. Great players miss shots for sure, but they miss in the rough and not OB.

Sure they do. Lorena Ochoa hit 3 strait drives OB last year i think...lol

One thing people tend to forget about tiger is that hes arrogant, he does not want to be 30 yards behing other players, butch and him argued about that subject endlessly, hes swinging at 120-130 whilst losing his height on the downswing at that speed, if he wasnt so insanely talented he,d probably whiff a few lol

I find it mind boggling that he is so far off line with his drives. Is it because he's

It's more like 350.For him, 'dialing it back' would probably still produce 300 yard drives. He's always had a high swing speed, and controlling it is always going to be hard. His swing fundamentals aren't quite as good as they were back in the day, thus he hits more erratic drives now, simple as that.If Foley can improve his swing, his driving accuracy will improve too, but given the power and speed he produces, it'll never be perfect, regardless. There's a reason the shortest hitters are also usually the most accurate

It's not arrogance. He wants to keep up with the tour length, which he should, if he wants to win. Granted, he also needs to find the fairway, but if hes 280 yards middle of the fairway and everyone else is 320 in the fairway going for the green in two, while he lays up....sorry, that isn't Tiger, and never has been.

No he doesnt want to keep up with tour length, he wants to dominate it, like he did when he first came out, when guys started catching up with him he changed things, like that crazy 1 foot squat on the downswing in the name of distance and the his crazy biceps he developed, as butch said in 2005 3 majorless years after their split "if he spent more time putting the ball in play rather than spending his time at the gym, he,d start winning again"

No he doesn't. He wants to keep up with it. He never dominated lengths, he was always up there, but never dominated. So he went 2003, 2004 and 2005 without a Major....ummmm, he still won 8 tournaments, was money leader, made Ryder Cup, got player of the year twice and Butch said that?

Bitch isn't exactly the image of good health. I think Tiger knows what he's doing.

I think Tiger knows what he's doing.

Although I bet he occasionally lost track of who.

When Tiger first came out he was one of the longest out there fact, when he started falling from the top 20 his ego was hurt, and the measures he took where too drastic in trying to be right up there, tiger was never outside the top 40, he was never failing to keep up with other guys, and 8 tournaments in 3 years for the man who done a grand slam the previous year? cmon thats a significant drop in preformance

I don't get how people are always saying Tiger is obsessed with distance. He was probably the last tour pro to stop using a steel shafted driver a few years ago, and it's been said many times that he uses a ball with the highest spin rate on tour--neither of those equipment choices sound like a guy who just wants to outdrive everybody

Hey, who said we miss badly?

Just kidding, of course we do. Especially me.

    • after some years experimenting around, I've settled on a mixed bag of mostly Pat Simmons vintage Tiger Sharks (the ones with the blue enamal on back of the clubheads): 3 thru 9 iron, + 3 wedges (PW, sand, chipper). Those super heavy clubheads really help me get my swing down and thru the ball. Also I carry an old Taylor 18-degree rescue club, 17-degree and 14 degree ImagineGolf metalwoods, and the famous Pat Simmons "alien" 1-iron. Finally a real brick-on-a-stick, the big-headed Bettinardi Ben Hogan model putter which is excellent for taking the break out of short putts and getting the ball hole high on long ones. Wait....is that 15 clubs? Oh well....
    • this topic brought to mind one my favorite golf-spectator memories. Back when, living in Santa Barbara CA, parked in my yellow cab just behind the 10th tee  (c. 380 yard par 4) at SB Muni golf course while eating lunch. A twosome comes by, and first up is this fat little mexican guy who takes a kinda squirelly practice swing, then addresses the ball and bashes a long, high, perfectly straight drive up to w/in about 5 yards of the green. Other guy is dressed to the 9's, pulls out what looks like a $300 driver....and hits a maybe 150-yard pop fly. Slams clubhead to the ground and yells, "it's fat! It's fat! Everything is fat today!!"  And that's how I learned what a "fat" shot is.
    • day 57. Technique practice in the net. Really trying to slow down.
    • It may not be surprising that in the previous 7,064 posts, this particular point has been discussed. To which I will counter: If we're talking about results, why only the majors? Unless you know something that I don't, neither of us are in any position to judge whether Woods or Nicklaus lived their overall life better, not that such a thing is even objectively measurable, nor is it relevant to the discussion.
    • As we've had to tell other people, the topic is which is the better GOLFER, not human being.
