Hi all,

If I, or others, asked this in the past, I apologize. I was fitted for irons last year, and needed 1.25" longer in the shafts. When purchasing fairway woods, and drivers, should I also get longer, or it doesn't matter?

Hi AlohaEd, I was also fitted for 1" longer irons, I'm 6'2", and my fairway woods and driver are not extra long at all. I've read quite a lot about it, and I would say that regular length drivers these days (45") are the most that a tall 'pro' golfer might use and still have a nice, accurate average. The little amount of distance you might obtain by lengthening woods is not worth the sacrifice in accuracy you might be losing, so I recommend 45" or less for the driver, and standard length for the fairway woods.

Thx. And I assume the it wouldn't matter for hitting the fairway wood of the deck either? Hopefully.

no

"standard" driver length is 45" as mentioned above and "standard" 3w length is 43"

wow, 1" over standard for 6'2" is a lot of extra club

i too am 6'2" and use "standard" length irons....and choke up about 1/2" on each one as well

i couldnt imagine adding an additional 1" to my irons

Cool. Thx all for your replies.  Until my game improves, eventually,  and it would make a difference getting fitted for driver/wood(loft, shaft, type, etc), I would save on  the fitting costs, etc, and just order something online then.  Preferrably on sale.

I'm 6-3 and use +1" and 4 1/2* upright (which also adds to length).   My 3 and 4 hybrids are +1".  My driver is standard but I just had a custom 17* fairway wood made.  Wow, this thing is awesome.  I love the added inch.  Its so much easier to hit then the standard 3 wood length.  I had to get used to the +1" shaft.  I was hitting everything off the heel for a few days.  I had to learn to stand away from the ball and then started hitting nice shots with it.

If you go with a longer shaft be sure to add a bit of stiffness to the shaft.  All my irons are regular flex but due to the length of the new fairway wood I had it built with a stiff shaft.  Its great!!  I had a Sonartec 3 wood 17* built with a Grafalloy Fairway Wood stiff shaft.  I hit it for the first time on the course a few days ago.  I used it 5 times and had great results each time.  I can't say that for my old fairway wood.

FYI - I was also fitted for a Ping K15 driver with a stiff shaft and +1 1/2" by Ping.  I didn't buy the club but was surprised by the fit and how easy to hit  and how long that thing was.

I see nothing wrong with longer shafts for taller players as long as you can control them.  If you over swing the results can be really bad, but if I keep my swing speed consistant then I've had no problems.  My swing speed is 94.

    • Day 10 (10 Jun 26) - Played in the midweek shootout at my home course - on aerated and sanded greens - day of trying to figure tempo to get the best roll on the greens.  Approach game was decently solid as was shots off the tee.
    • Ok, I'm trying to find a feel to hit a consistent ball flight (irons).  My current predicament.  1. I try to do the arms down stuff better, with the club feeling like it is way behind me more. It's just a cluster of results. Most of the time, I can't get any speed on the swing. If I get my arms down faster, I just throw them out.  2. I focus all my attention on turning better. Pushing off with my left leg and getting my right side through better. On the DTL view, this doesn't produce anywhere close where the hands and club should be. The result is usually ball first contact, lower ball flight, more centered contact.  At this point, I am going with option 2. Stop thinking about what the hands do. Just make a shorter backswing, keep it wide, turn through. Somehow, the club head finds the ball. My focus is so much on just making sure I turn, it's like, "Oh, that contact was better.... Oh, that bell flight looks playable." If not, I will just be practicing my entire summer.
    • Nope, they spent too much money. They are in over 28 million on the football roster and related NIL compensation at this point. Boosters associated with any Texas college football team has HUGE sway. The AD is between a rock and a hard place. They put a lot of money into Sorsby, at the chance of winning a NC this year. If you move on, you basically wasted a lot.  This is why Ohio State wants 3 QB's they feel can start. That is why the backups the past 5 years at some point transfer. Texas Tech has no backup near the quality of Sorsby. If they move on, they are screwed for 2026.
    • Maybe there's something I still don't understand about the situation. Wouldn't Texas Tech do itself a favor to move on from Sorsby at this point?
    • Day 281 6-10 Full swing, fast, getting low point ahead of "towel".  Working on flow during this seems to help.
