Well I have been looking and working with a few local reps and a club fitter in search of my perfect putter. One thing I hate is switching putters and I have only done it twice in the last 12 years. I have been searching and trying new putters for over a year now and I have finally got it to my final 2 choices.

Option 1 - Odyssey protype 82, customized to 33", 1 degree flat and 325g weight

Option 2 - Odyssey Black Series tour Design #8, customized to 33'', 1 degree flat and 325g weight, I also will add a white sight  similar to the look for the protype 82 .

I am fortunate to have some financial help from my local Callaway rep who has been nice enough to give me a steal of a deal. Its been great going through the whole putter fitting process that IMO gets over looked by most golfers when buying a putter. Since putting is such an important part of the game I would highly recommend going through this process whether you are looking for a new putter or if you would just like to help your putting improve. As Dave Pelz says, "Most people change there stroke to fit their putter and not adjust their putter to fit their stroke". The most improvement I have seen from going through this fitting is more consistent putts and my putts roll along my intended line a lot smoother and more accurate on my misses and makes. I also notice a big difference in confidence when you can setup to a putt and make your stroke without feeling like your putter is in the way.

I will make my final decision after my 2 tourney's this week. I just thought I would share my experience and opinions after going through the putter fitting process.

Good post. After my last lesson going over putting my entire putting stroke change and now my bad habits I had seem to be going away. The problem is with the new stroke I don't feel confident with my putter. It is a good putter but doesn't fit with my new stroke. Very mental I know but was thinking of getting a fitting for a putter but didn't ask because I wasn't sure it was a real issue or an option.

although neither are horrible choices, i strongly recommend the protype 82. I just purchased one earlier this month, and after getting used to the insert face...i have fallen in love. Every stroke is 2x as pure as the softest milled face. I love the soft feel, it makes me very confident in all areas of my putting. in my opinion the protype gets the nod every single day, softest best feeling putter around IMO. Just takes a week of decent practice to get used to the insert face (unless currently using another odyssey with similar insert) and once you are used to it, the ball rolls like a beauty every single stroke. When i miss putts now, i know its me and not the putter. either way im sure you will be happy with your decision, heel shafted is the way to go.

I totally agree, putting is very mental. You need to feel comfortable with putter and your stroke, they both need to blend organically. It can be as simple as a degree here or there or an inch taller or shorter. I would recommend taking a read through Dave Pelz putting bible and other books. I have read them many times and it can be a huge help when trying to work out the mechanics and simplifying the putting stroke. So I would highly recommend you go and get your putter fitted, its the most important club you have and I find it gets over looked.

Haha my putter was my first club. I bought it at a yard sale when i was 8 I putted around my house for 3 or 4 more years before I ever thought about playing real golf. The shaft is about 27 inch. Not only does it not have any fancy alignment tool it doesn't have any at all. I had it regripped a few years ago and the guy at the pro shop asked me which mini-putt i stole it from. Despite all that putting is the only part of my game that is anywhere near where I want it. I might be the only guy in history of golf to shoot a 96 while only taking 33 putts. I dont know if ill ever get a new putter. I cant exactly walk in to shop and ask for their selection of 27 inch shafted putters to test. Anyway nice post putters are so hard to get right.

    • I did not realize that, I was thinking a more traditional golf club.
    • Thanks for the feedback. @StuM, we are a "club without real estate" so no facilities or pro. We have a membership of around 185 players and we only play together as a group at our tournaments, which are held at public access courses. A group of us setup the tournaments, collect the money and dole out the prizes.
    • In general, granting free relief anywhere on the course isn't recommended.  Similarly, when marking GUR, the VSGA and MAPGA generally don't mark areas that are well away from the intended playing lines, no matter how poor the conditions.  If you hit it far enough offline, you don't necessarily deserve free relief.  And you don't have to damage clubs, take unplayable relief, take the stroke, and drop the ball in a better spot.
    • If it's not broken don't fix it. If you want to add grooves to it just because of looks that's your choice of course. Grooves are cut into putter faces to reduce skid, the roll faced putter is designed to do the same thing. I'm no expert but it seems counter productive to add grooves to the roll face. Maybe you can have it sand-blasted or something to clean up the face. Take a look at Tigers putter, its beat to hell but he still uses it.
    • I get trying to limit relief to the fairway, but how many roots do you typically find in the fairway? Our local rule allows for relief from roots & rocks anywhere on the course (that is in play). My home course has quite a few 100 year old oaks that separate the fairways. Lift and move the ball no closer to the hole. None of us want to damage clubs.
