I am looking to invest in a new set of irons before long.  I am looking at the Adams Ideas A7 or the Cleveland TA7 set.  Any feedback on either one, or one over the other?

Funny thread for me. I just bought A7's yesterday at Dicks Sporting Goods. I went in and probably the one set I didnt try was the Clevelands. They set me up on the machine witih X20's, Burner 2.0(out of price range), Burner HT, A7,  A3. For me I loved the feel of the Burner HT's but the set was 4-AW I had just ordered Cleveland wedges online in 50-56-60* so the AW was of no use to me. Further my goal was to improve my long iron range and the A7 3-4hybrids were great. They produced the best most consistent results on the monitor fo any hybrids I hit yesterday.

I also liked how the A7's are  a bit of combo set where the 5i is wider soled and the PW is more like a blade with a sharp topline. They are also pretty attractive looking. I went to the PitchnPutt on the way back and hit more GIR with the new PW my first time using it on a course than I have ever before with my old callaways. These clubs so far got an A+ from me.

I love the Adams A7 set.  At address, they look like better players' clubs (at least from 6I on down).  They feel pretty good at impact.  They give feedback on bad shots without being harsh.  The distance gaps are consistent in the set for just about everyone I know that uses them -- and that says something about the quality control, too.   And you can get any number of wedges with it (although I always suggest a standard SW), and their wedges have a good amount of bounce.  And the lofts of most clubs aren't crazily out of control.

I suggest the Adams A7 set to just about everyone who isn't in the market for players' irons.

The only downside is that Adams doesn't have a very good fitting program.  For a company that has been along for as much time as they have, and who has a category-leading product (hybrids), this is very surprising to me.  Thankfully, most shops can fit you for them.

Cleveland still makes irons?

All joking aside, cleveland makes quality Irons but it seems to me they have stopped marketing top end irons. They seem to fly under the radar a bit but they still make a very competitive product. They are now marketing to the mid level golfer who isn't quite comfortable with blades but is good enough that full on huge cavityback's are not longer needed either. They have what they call a "Micro Cavity" on the back. They claim this increases forgiveness while still allowing basic shot shaping and nice contact from thick grass. I dont know much about Adams irons but if you fall into that area where your no longer in full game improvement mode but you still are not completely comfy with blades you could look into the Cleveland line.

Can't comment on the Adams...

I used to game Cleveland TA7's.  Great irons to me, plenty of forgiveness, yet not at all chunky-looking as most current game-improvement irons.  I had retired them, currently playing Callaway X20-Tours.

Recently I broke out the TA7's to be part of a "backup set" at my folks' house when I visit so I didn't have to keep checking clubs on flights, and I just played them last week.  It was actually eerie to me how similar they look at address and also felt at impact compared to my X20 Tours.  Little offset, nice feel, pretty forgiving, yet definitely workable (as I put myself behind several trees during the round and had to hit a bunch of circus shots...which i actually executed pretty well!).

I played TA5's for about 10 years. Solid clubs, very forgiving. That being said, I play Adams Hybrids and when I next purchase irons I will give them a hard look, as I feel their hybrids are possibly the best engineered clubs on the market. I've never had a product that was as perfect for my game

    • I was going to start a thread, but this seems like the place.  Yesterday I played my matchplay match at my local club.  My opponent is a notorious sandbagger by reputation.  The pro once pulled his tournament rounds from the past several years and said that it is impossible his tournament rounds are legit based on his handicap. here is what happened last night.  I am getting 4 shots from him.  His current handicap index is 15.3 i shot 45 on the front.   Was down 4 after nine, he had three birdies and shot even par. I was closed out on thirteen, we halved with a bogey.  That bogey put him one over par for his round.   He then took a triple on 14 and then left. As if that wasn’t bad enough, he lied about his score.   I wrote down on my scorecard what the score was.  He put higher values that didn’t affect the outcome of the match to pad his score and apparently make it not look as obvious.   He shot 36 on the front, but claimed 40.  The higher values for his score were in the online scoring app our club uses.  He did it this way: I won #7. He had a 2 foot putt for par that if he made would still lose the hole.   He picked up and said it didn’t matter since I won.  He took a 5 instead of a 4 after picking up a gimme. on #8 his approach shot on this par 4 was 8 inches.  I verbally conceded the putt but I had hit into a hazard.  I finished the hole with a 6.  Instead of birdie he put in for par. on #9, another par 4, his approach was to 18 inches.  I missed my par putt and then knowing how close I verbally conceded the putt.  I missed my bogey putt, he never conceded mine.  Instead of birdie he put down a bogey. He padded his score by 4 shots on the front.  And then did again on 10.  I rinsed one and made 6 on a par 4.  I putted out and he was fishing balls out of the lake so I drove off to the next tee.  He had 15 feet laying two but claimed a 5.     love to know the odds of a 15 handicap being even thru 12 holes on a round of golf.
