So I went and got those wedges......but now I want the MacGregor VIPs instead!

Went and picked up a 52/8 and 56/14, brand new, Vokeys.  I had a tough time deciding between them and....the MacGregor VIPs.  Really liked the Macs, ESPECIALLY for the price.  On sale for $59.99/piece, or 2 for $100, 3 for $140.  I'm now having buyer's remorse because I've read how much people seem to really like the Mac VIPs.  It seems like for the price, it's hard to justify the $119/piece I just paid for the vokeys.

Any thoughts on this?  Am I going to be sorry if I return these and get the Macs?  I'm not sure I liked the grip on the Macs, so I'm thinking about replacing it with some standard Golf Pride grips when I get the extensions put in.

Any help is appreciated.

Did you hit both to determine if your potential remorse is based more on financial side versus actual club play?

The Mac, being 2-for-1 cost versus the Vokey, is only one component to the decision - feel and feedback also needs to be considered.

Vokey is a very nice wedge (I have never hit a Mac); sounds like you are focusing more on the cost - only you can decide that.

Update:  Last night I took the vokeys I'd bought back in, and hit both.  I liked the feel of the Macs better, and it just felt like the right choice.  Getting them regripped and extensions added in as well, should be ready today.  Even though my instructor told me to stay away from it (not just for now, but always in his opinion), I picked up the 60* as well (52*, 56*, 60*).  It was a great deal (3 for $140) and my thinking was that it's something that I eventually want to learn to use, so why not pick it up now and at least have fun experimenting with it at the range and practice area?

Love the look and feel of these wedges, and I'm excited to see MacGregor progress and regrow their brand back to the elite status it used to have.

You'll come to love the 60° in due time.  I chip around the house almost every night with one, and it has become my go-to club around the green as I have plenty of confidence in it.  My avatar pic is my 56° wedge.

Your obviously a much more skilled player than I am. But I have found love for my 60* its the reason why I invested in more Cleveland wedges.

Around here most of the greens are small table tops and as a result bump'n'run is only possible from head on towards the green off either side or the back there is usually a 6+ft hill to chip over. With the 60 I practiced a sweet smooth lob that i can get up high and stop on a dime, my scores would be considerably worse without it.

Are the Macs forged? I ask because the Vokeys aren't, and that may account for why you prefer the Mac's feel.

I hope you're not talking about me.  I'm still trying to break 100, while it looks like you're well past that.

Yes, the Macs are forged.

oops for some reason i thought that said 3.00 haha

Good luck getting past the 100 marker.

A tip for hitting the 60 open your clubface way up and use a very smooth easy swing and just watch that ball go high up and stop fast. Its one of the most rewarding shots when you hit it right and you should be able to practice it in your backyard. People notice when you pull off a nice lob.

Yes, they are nice wedges.  However, MacGregor is now owned by Golfsmith, so forget about the return to elite status.

    • Day 542, April 26, 2024 A lesson no-show, no-called (he had the wrong time even though the last text was confirming the time… 😛), so I used 45 minutes or so of that time to get some good work in.
    • Yeah, that. It stands out… because it's so rare. And interest in Caitlin Clark will likely result in a very small bump to the WNBA or something… and then it will go back down to very low viewership numbers. Like it's always had. A small portion, yep. It doesn't help that she lost, either. Girls often don't even want to watch women playing sports. My daughter golfs… I watch more LPGA Tour golf than she does, and it's not even close. I watch more LPGA Tour golf than PGA Tour golf, even. She watches very little of either. It's just the way it is. Yes, it's a bit of a vicious cycle, but… how do you break it? If you invest a ton of money into broadcasting an LPGA Tour event, the same coverage you'd spend on a men's event… you'll lose a ton of money. It'd take decades to build up the interest. Even with interest in the PGA Tour declining.
    • Oh yea, now I remember reading about you on TMZ!
    • Of course there's not a simple or knowable answer here. But the whole Caitlin Clark phenomenon is a nice example IMO. Suddenly there was wall to wall media coverage and national attention and... the women's tournament got similar ratings to the men's and much higher ratings than the men in the final four. With every indication that there will be some portion of the uptick that remains going forward. And there's the whole element that Sue Bird brought up. That basketball needed a pretty enough white superstar guard. One who looks like the "cute little white girls" that describes most of the soccer USWNT that's been able to achieve much higher popularity than any version of women's basketball, which is dominated by black players and none of any race who could be described as little... I do think women's sports are in a good place to start taking off more though. It's really only in the coming 5-10 years that the majority of girls will start to come of age with post Title IX grandmothers (as in their grandmothers were allowed to be serious athletes). I don't follow men's or women's basketball much, but in golf for sure the women's tour has gotten much deeper over the past 20 years and only looks to keep going in that direction. I've heard the same about women's basketball. And the patriarchal attitudes that socialized girls out of sports and everyone out of women's sports fandom aren't gone but have def diminished.
