Beginner Club Help

Hello everyone,

I just graduated from college and I have recently decided that I want to take up golfing.  I have played 1 round and gone to the range a few times; I suck, but that is expected.  So the story is, my mom and step-dad are giving me a $500 gift card to get some irons to start playing.  I went to golf galaxy tonight and swung some clubs for about an hour and I just don't know which ones to pick.  There are two that I liked the most and they are marked with an asterisk below.  I just want some honest opinions from people on which clubs they like and if they are worth the money.

Clubs I tried out:

Cobra S3 - $399

*Callaway X20 - $399

Adams (part of a complete set) - $299 for whole set with drivers and bag

Taylor Made Burner - $499

*Ping G10 - $499

If you are completely limited to just those options I would say go with the G10's but what I think you should REALLY do is get on ebay and find a set of G15's. My playing partner has had these clubs for about the past year and he went from a 40 handi to a 15. These things have a pretty chunky clubhead and as a result are more forgiving then jesus christ himself.

After these you will still need a driver/putter/woods/hybrids but this comes with a 56 degree and that will probably be enough for you in the wedge department. As for buying the rest of these all I can say is don't buy anything new or in a pro shop. I have bought literally every golf club I own on ebay and never paid more than half of the clubs MSRP. Theres no reason to pay full price or buy a new club especially if you are a beginner. If you need suggestions for driver/putter/woods/hybrids LMK.

just some suggestions

Driver - burner superfast (original) got it for 90$ on ebay 2 weeks ago, this things has a red hot face, also take a look at adams speedline

putter - i would suggest a ping wack-e, this thing has a massive clubhead making alignment a cinch, and it really "PINGS" when you hit it. Also odyssey white hot 2 ball is great for alignment and the insert helps for pure contact. I would steer away from blade putters, and go more towards mallet putters, alignment is easier and generally mallets are heavier so you don't need such a big stroke. the smaller the stroke, the less chance for error!

woods/hybrids - if you want something forgiving and cheap go with a nike sumo/dymo wood/hybrid with the square club head. the dymo has a really hot face and the rounded face at the bottom helps pick balls out of the rough. if not fo with Adams A7 hybrids or A7OS if you want something REALLY forgiving.

I thought that this was hilarious, just saying.

About the clubs, I mean all of us here on SandTrap are going to have opinions on what we are going to hit, if you really are looking for probably the most forgiving set for someone who knows next to nothing about golf... go with the Pings but otherwise I feel like just go with your gut feeling and buy the one that you hit the best, don't buy it because it costs the most.

Get the Wilson Di11s. Wow I hit them for the first time today and am converted. I currently play the Callaway x22s and I can say the Di11s are wayyy more forgiving. You can get a brand new set on ebay for 310 shipped, and send them in to Wilson where they'll adjust the lie and length for you for 40 bucks!

Well I went and got a set of clubs tonight as my graduation present.  I went and tried the two clubs liked the most and I have to say I liked the Callaways the best.  So tonight I got a set of Callaway X-20 irons, a Taylor Made Burner Driver (used), and a Callaway bag.  My step dad gave me a putter he got for free from somewhere, he says its good though.  Thank you again for all the input from everyone.

Good move on the X20s. I played them for two years, and traded them in at Christmas on another Callaway model I also like.

Not to change the subject, but I would suggest you take some lessons in the early going. You could go with individual lessons if your dad or friends can suggest someone, or you might try a summer golf clinic. In a clinic, beginners get together a couple of evenings a week to learn the basics.

Don't worry about getting all 14 clubs right now. Start with what you have, and fill in a club or two as you start playing.

curious as to why no love for the burners on this thread? i just picked them up with some cleveland wedges and love them!
