whats your opinion on 460 cc heads ive never hit one but straight away by looking at it it feels as though it be too big and awkward to swing.  Are they better/more forgiving than 400ccs? Another thing was the driver shafts are getting longer and longer these days presumably so companies can sell more because they can go further when hit center.  A driver used to be about 43" long which is what a 3 wood is now so Im thinking why not just get my driver cut down to about that 43.5 44"r so, as I will most likely have much much more control and hit the sweet spot much more often?will much distance be lost?

I agreed you, 460cc is big head for me. So I like 46" inch graphite with 460cc big head. It will longer distance and more forgiving sweet hit!  I have three driver are all 8.5 loft is tour. I decide i've straight with 8.5 loft.  I dislike mix number loft driver.  There proshop not have drive 8.5 loft tour.  that's why I ordered special and modified custom my drivers.

I used 400cc to 430cc head drive with 43" to 44". I sold it.

If you cut down shaft that 43.5 or 44" cause you will lost distance however more accuracy and control.

I have hit a few that were dead straight, with a nice trajectory and well over 300 yds ....... so if you can control the modern stuff, you will be rewarded. But like you said in the old days a driver had a 200 cc head and a 43 inch shaft, still many really good players also hit these around 275-300 yds.

So it can be done with both.

I think the major difference is that with the modern longshafted 460 cc drivers, even the average hacker can hit 200 yds, missing the sweetspot by a mile.

The current 3W has a head size similar to the old driver and also a matching length ...... the distance about equal to the average old driver.......

So I feel what you mean, but why not take advantage of the new tools.

I remember my first 460cc driver (a Cobra i think) and it looked like a VW Beetle on a stick...however, i think you get used to it quickly, and they're definitely more forgiving on mishits.  Definitely some manufacturer's head shapes still look much more traditional at address which might make the transition easier.

I do agree with the other posts that shorter shafts will likely decrease some clubhead speed and lose some potential distance--although as the OP said if one hits the sweet spot more consistently and keeps the ball in play better with a shorter shaft, that's still much better overall even if you're 5-10 yards shorter.

Before cutting down a bunch of shafts, an easier option to experiement with is choking down an inch or two on the grip (Anthony Kim routinely does this if i remember reading correctly).  Also, beware that by cutting down a shaft (or choking down), that same shaft might play a little stiffer than before and alter your launch conditions.

Me gusto 45+"driver @ 460cc. You play 43" if want, just + weight for swing weight to get high and feel bueno.

I really don't get the logic in cutting down shafts or shrinking the head... just tee off with a 3 wood. They make 14 degree three woods with shorter shafts that give you good distance and good conrtrol. Look at the pros how many pros hit driver on every par 4 and 5? Not a whole lot, you don't need to either.

But the most pros hit their fairway metals a whole lot further than the average club player anyway...

Yes and most average players don't play from PGA Tour length tees.
