trouble hitting with irons

Hi everyone,

I have recently benn having alot of trouble hitting my irons i dont know what im doing wrong but i cant seem to get any elevation on the ball. Any advice will be appreciated. Thanks

My guess (without seeing a swing) is you're not hitting down on the ball, and/or you're not transferring your weight correctly to your left foot. (if your right handed)

yeah people always tell me that i need to hit down on the ball, which i have been working on, but i guess i need to get some lessons to learn how because it hasn't been working out

Making solid contact will allow the club loft to get the ball in the air if you hit your irons low on the grooves you are actually topping or thining the shots.  If you look at your irons where are most of the ball marks?  low on the grooves or on the center of your club face.

One drill that I find helpful is to take your most lofted wedge, 60 or 56 degree and simple practice hitting pitch shots from the practice area of distances of 10 - 50 yards only.

The focus is making solid contact on the club face only and not on distance.  do you thin the wedges or do you make solid contact?  work your way up the irons taking only partial backswings and focus only on solid contact.

Your set up and backswing is key to your iron play and this drill has helped my iron play.

+1 for this one, i found when i learned how to do pitch shots and chip shots, it helps ingrain the impact position, soon after my ball flight got alot better. When i find my ball flight getting higher from my old flip at the ball, i would practice a few lag drills, and then practice a few half wedges making sure the hands stay ahead of the ball.

I am playing with titleist irons now and some people tell me that they are harder to hit. Right now i am looking at updating  to a Adams XTD insight II iron set. Anyone know anything about them?

Try shortening your backswing, and ending it when your left shoulder comes into contact with your chin. This takes away the shakiest part of the swing for us high handicappers and encourages acceleration through the ball. Also, try and get to the point where your shaft is pointing toward the target at impact. Like this if I was looking at you face on -->   /.

One tip to help with hitting down with your irons is to concentrate on your hands being ahead of the ball at impact, this will also help you hit the ball first and make better, more consistent contact

As far as the irons you are using are concerned, what titleist irons are they? and what flex shaft is in them? A more forgiving clubhead will provide more forgiveness on mishits but may or may not produce a higher ball flight. But if the shaft you are using in your irons is too stiff, you may need to change to a more flexible option, this will produce a higher ball flight more easily than just changing the type of iron.

Don't switch irons.  Just practice.  Golfers of all stripes learned to hit down on the ball for decades (centuries even) with hard to hit blades.  I'd save up the new club-buying until you've got a repeatable swing and are making consistent solid contact.  Every single beginner and/or bad golfer I know who sprung for new clubs instead of lessons or practice was absolutely 0% better with the new clubs.

But yeah, my thoughts would be that if you decide to change irons, make sure you get properly fitted because you might need to change to reg flex shafts to get the ball in the air a bit more easily.
