I walked up to my ball about 20 yards from the green today to hit a pitch shot and dropped my putter (which was about 4" off the ground) so I could hit the ball. After letting go of it I heard a "ting ting" noise and when I looked down I saw the head of my putter laying on the ground next to the shaft. So that sucks. I had to finish the round with a friends putter that I was playing with.

The putter is a Target Line TL.4 and I can't find the manufacturers website. While searching I found out that it's made by a company called Knight and it is a Walmart putter. I got this putter at Play it Again Sports for $30 and I picked it over the name brand putters because I liked the feel of it. Now I wish I had gotten one that was name brand.

I really like the look of the Taylormade Rossa Itsy Bitsy Spider putter, do any of y'all have one of these? I prefer the big/heavy head putters over blade putters because I'm more consistent as far as ball speed with them.

So are there any other brand/models that I should be looking at over the Taylormade or should I shoot for that one?

Well that sucks! Could you not take the broken putter to a pro shop and find out how much a replacement shaft/grip would cost you rather than buying a whole new putter? If you already like it that makes more sense than buying a new one.

Regarding other manufacturers I was trying out putters last week. My summary of the ones I tried would be:

- Fisher Classic Tours have a nice weight to them and feel solid but the insert is soft and gooey so there's no zing of the face.

- Taylormade Ghost putters I tried are ok but I didn't feel anything special from them. The white head was more distracting for me and made it harder to check whether my stroke was correct (I normally un-focus my eyes and watch my putter line in peripheral vision rather than looking straight at it so when the whole head is white I can't do that).

- Odyssey White Ice putters felt nice and solid, easy to aim and nice off the face but a little 'clicky' when the ball made contact.

- Titleist Scotty Cameron was nice, solid, easy to aim, the perfect weight and generally great. Also 2x the price of everything else.

- Ping iN Half Wack-E was my putter of choice. I love how the shaft goes straight down into the face of the putter (no plumber's hosel) and I love how it's face balanced which suits my stroke more than toe-heavy. The overall weight was perfect for the 'ping' off the club face and would have been too fast if it was any heavier. Every putt I hit was off on more-or-less the correct line and at a good pace with a much tighter dispersion pattern. Having said that though it does also have negatives; The head is a bizarre design, reminiscent of something Klingon and the head cover is also very bizarre as it has a velcro line across the back of it and the cover only just fits over the club when pulled very tight.

I bought the Wack-E in the end to replace my iWi Anser and am very happy with my purchase indeed!

That putter does have a gooey feeling face and although I liked it I think it probably wasn't the best one for me since my putting puts a hurting on my scores. So I think this is a good reason to get something new.

I do like the Odyssey White Ice putters and that might be what I go with. I'm going to run down to Aberdeen here in a little while and test drive a few.

I've been looking online a little and I'm liking the Ping Sydney putter but that thing is $250 . The average price I'm seeing for the Taylormade is around $70 to $100.

I went to a couple golf shops today and the one I'm leaning toward now is the Ping Scottsdale Wolverine putter because it felt the best. They didn't have the Ping Sydney putter there so I couldn't check it out.

Something to think about is getting a model that was introduced 3 or 4 seasons ago. You can get really good deals on high quality name brand equipment. Our local Golf Town has great deals on Ping iWi ($88), A variety of Yes putters ($110) and various Odyssey and Taylor Made models for around $100. Lots of variety - something for everyone.

This is a great idea if you are looking for a high end putter at a cheaper price. I will say the Yes putters at $110 is not a very good deal at all since I've seen them and bought one at $40.

I was thinking about it earlier, has anyone ever made a putter from scratch? I was thinking that I could grab a block of aluminum or steel and spend some quality time with the milling machine and see what I come up with.

  • 2 weeks later...

My putter search is over.

The other day I traded a Callaway Diablo Big Bertha 3 wood that I can't hit for a Ping Anser that a friend didn't use.

I played one game with it and realized that I still can't putt with a blade putter.

Today I jokingly suggested to the guy in the pro shop that I would trade him a Ping Anser for the Ping Craz-E that he had on the rack. It surprised me when he said that he couldn't do a straight trade because I realized that he meant he would be willing to trade. So I got mine and showed it to him when he asked then he said that he would take $20 plus my putter. I'm happy because my putting improved 10X with this putter.

  • 10 months later...

I went to Aberdeen yesterday with the same guy that I got the Ping Anser putter from because he was looking for a new one.

We went into Roberts Golf and as we were checking out the putters I noticed that they had a Ping Sydney. I checked out some others with the intention of checking it out before leaving.

He picked it up and asked if I saw it. I said yeah, then he asked if I saw the price tag, I said no. When he lifted up the tag with $85 on it I got it from him and checked it out. He told me that the putter was leaving that shop that day because if I didn't buy it that he would. I bought it and told him that he could get the Craz-E from me for $30 since I finally got the putter I've wanted since the first time I saw it.

We played 18 at Deercroft then another 18 at The Bluff golf course after leaving the golf shop.

My putting with the Sydney was about the same with the exception one 40 footer that had about 4 foot of right to left break on it that surprised me when it dropped. His putting was a lot better with the Craz-E compared to the sledgehammer that he was using.

I read a review on the Sydney the other day and saw that the only con was the metallic clink noise when you contact the ball. I don't see that as a con, I kind of like it.

I also like the midsize grip on the putter.
