Im looking for new Irons and I am a pretty high handicap.  I came across the Tommy Armour 845 irons on sale at Sports Authority for 199.  They feel good and light when i swing it and they look nice as well with the dark color to them.  I am a lefty though so trying stuff out at the stores is tough.

So the main thing is does anyone know much about these irons or how good of quality Tommy Armour is??  Are these irons good for beginners and if anyone has used these what did you think?

I had a set of these before upgrading to my current irons.  I always thought of them as good performing and high quality clubs.  I liked the look and feel of them but wanted something more forgiving with more of a cavity back.

$199 is HIGH for a set of them.

I asked a similar question about two years ago, and got lots of rousing stories from people who had once used them. The 845 family was one of the top irons back in the late 1990s, and held its own against ping.

Here is the link: http://thesandtrap.com/t/29495/tommy-armour-845-irons-any-stories

The Tommy Armour 845s and the Mizuno MP57s are tied for my favorite model of irons which I never owned, but admired when I saw them in other's bags.

BTW, is this a used set, or is someone doing a reissue of the 845s?

Focus, connect and follow through!

If I remember correctly, Sports Authority now owns the Tommy Armour brand much like GolfSmith owns McGregor or Dick's owns Maxfli.  They are not the same as the original 845s...

Yea def talking about the new ones brand new in store for 199.  They felt great in the store but did not actually get to hit with them so I just wana make sure Tommy Armour is good quality and see if these are actually good irons.  Hopefully someone has used these and can compare them personally to others.

Sorry, I didn't even know they made new ones.  I was talking about the old ones.  My guess would be they may not be the quality that they used to be, but I'm sure they are fine for a beginner set.   If you like the look and feel, go for it.

This.  I don't think the quality is quite at the level it use to be, but overall I'd assume it's a good beginner set.  Better than the boxed crap that they sell at Wal-Mart or Target for sure.

Yea I might end up going with some Taylormade burner Hts,  more expensive but also a good beginner set and they are known to be a good quality brand so i guess I cant go wrong there.  The store didnt have lefties but they can send some in... sucks that these stores dont show lefties any love so I just hope for the best i guess.

Yeah... I grabbed the wrong pic apparently, but still big difference between the older 845s and the ones the OP is talking about.

Absolutely, there is a big difference, just ask Davis and Freddy who were on staff back in the early 90s.

I loved the old Silverscot iron. I wanted a set of those for so long when I was growing up playing golf. We had a set in the pro shop and I would always walk past them on my way out dreaming of owning a set one day. It never happened. Too pricey those days, but my folks still got me a full set of clubs not too dissimilar that were good enough to last me 15 years. Good luck with your search..

  • 5 months later...

I just picked up a set of TA 845s Silver Scot for $70! They need re-gripping, and one of the irons has a bit of a nick on the leading edge but, other than that, they're generally in pretty good shape (though I will probably get a regrooving tool and clean the grooves up a bit).

Question: I've seen 845s sets on eBay both with and without ferrules. Mine have ferrules - anybody know the difference (e.g. era when made)? If it helps, my PW is 48 deg.

A quick Googling produces results of people saying that heads without ferrules are "original" - I don't know what this means, though. An "original" head could have been re-shafted at some point, and a ferrule could've been added. My 845s's (without ferrule) have True Temper shafts in them (can't tell anything further because of wear on the True Temper paint logo) with a sticker near the grip that says "Tommy Armour Tour Step." They also still have the original Golf Pride Victory grips on them.

I don't think it's going to have a huge impact on playability or resale value.

My shafts say "Tommy Armour Tour Step", the same as yours, but the grips say "Tommy Armour 845s" on the grip gap, and "845s" in white under your lower thumb. Some of the clubs have "Made in China" stickers on them, so I'm assuming they're not first generation 845s. They're also not grey like the early ones, definitely more silver than grey.
