So my collection of clubs is ALMOST complete!

I currently have

  • Callaway Diablo Octane Tour Driver (9.5*)
  • Callaway Diablo Octane Tour Fairway Wood (15*)
  • Mizuno JPX-800 Pro Irons (5i - PW)
  • Callaway X Series Jaws Wedges (52* 56* 60*)
  • Odyssey White Ice #1 Putter

The only thing that I am missing now are 2 more hybrids. The only thing is...I do not know which kinds to buy. I do not know what loft to look for, my Wood is 15* and the 5 iron is 26*.

What are you guy's advice on this? And also, what kind of hybrids are good? I'm looking to spend around $100 for each hybrid

With hybrids, it's best to demo.

Having said that, since you carry the Diablo Fairway, how about another? They seem incredibly easy to hit, easier than any hybrid. You could opt for a 19 and 23, although you may feel like an "old-man."

Have never enjoyed Callaway hybrids, but you may like them.

Try out callawaygolfpreowned.com for your budget.

I never found it easy to hit a hybrid. Even after hitting well on a launch monitor I am not consistant with them at the course or the driving range. Same with 3 iron. However it is getting better. Hybrids HAVE TO be hit like an iron or the ball is not gonna fly. My iron shots are the best when I get the divot in front of the ball. The hybrid has to be hit like that only!

I wish I cold hit the 3 iron consistantly and then this hybrid issue would have been gone on its own.

Has anyone hit the Mizuno MP FLI-HI 2,3,4 irons? they are somewhere between a hybrid and an iron. Hitting these woulg be a good idea before deciding on a hybrid.

I found the Adams Idea Pro Gold on EBay for $69 each new. The Matrix shaft matches up well to your driver and 3 wood (I have the same set-up and had everything frequencied). Even though I bought them sight unseen, they have been superb as they are more of a player's hybrid with no offset.

I would also have you check out the Cally site as well.  Since you need to cover 3 wood to 5 iron, I would probably recommend 20 and 23, but it really depends on how much distance you need to cover vs lofts.  Your best bet is to demo, but that is not always practical when looking for a steal.

    • after some years experimenting around, I've settled on a mixed bag of mostly Pat Simmons vintage Tiger Sharks (the ones with the blue enamal on back of the clubheads): 3 thru 9 iron, + 3 wedges (PW, sand, chipper). Those super heavy clubheads really help me get my swing down and thru the ball. Also I carry an old Taylor 18-degree rescue club, 17-degree and 14 degree ImagineGolf metalwoods, and the famous Pat Simmons "alien" 1-iron. Finally a real brick-on-a-stick, the big-headed Bettinardi Ben Hogan model putter which is excellent for taking the break out of short putts and getting the ball hole high on long ones. Wait....is that 15 clubs? Oh well....
    • this topic brought to mind one my favorite golf-spectator memories. Back when, living in Santa Barbara CA, parked in my yellow cab just behind the 10th tee  (c. 380 yard par 4) at SB Muni golf course while eating lunch. A twosome comes by, and first up is this fat little mexican guy who takes a kinda squirelly practice swing, then addresses the ball and bashes a long, high, perfectly straight drive up to w/in about 5 yards of the green. Other guy is dressed to the 9's, pulls out what looks like a $300 driver....and hits a maybe 150-yard pop fly. Slams clubhead to the ground and yells, "it's fat! It's fat! Everything is fat today!!"  And that's how I learned what a "fat" shot is.
    • day 57. Technique practice in the net. Really trying to slow down.
    • It may not be surprising that in the previous 7,064 posts, this particular point has been discussed. To which I will counter: If we're talking about results, why only the majors? Unless you know something that I don't, neither of us are in any position to judge whether Woods or Nicklaus lived their overall life better, not that such a thing is even objectively measurable, nor is it relevant to the discussion.
    • As we've had to tell other people, the topic is which is the better GOLFER, not human being.
