On typical rubber mats that mask your fat shots, if you take a dry erase marker, black preferably and mark the bottom of the club, some of the ink will transfer to the mat and you'll see fat shots. Black way behind the ball. Eventually you'll run out of space, but better than nothing.

Hope this helps.

Oh and rainy and watery, this method not so good.

I've got some experience with this issue... My first 3-4 years of golf I played on a short course with nothing but mats on the tees. I didn't play awful, but man my game went down the drain when I visited other courses. I had absolutely no idea I was hitting it fat at the time. I've tried the impact bag behind the ball and stuff like that, but what I liked best is to put a towel or something down behind the ball. Give it some distance at first, then move it closer. On a well struck ball, you can almost leave the towell right up against the ball. Useful way to get instant feedback if you have trouble feeling it yourself. Once I found the feeling of hitting a ball well, I started noticing the bad shots and tell more often.

I like this towel idea! Will try it when I go to the range today. Tapatalking, sorry for typos and autocorrect.

I used the towel method as well.  Nothing will cure you of hitting fat like the shame from having to repeatedly get people to stop hitting so you can retrieve your towel from down-range.

If the mats at the range are cheap enough, you'll get a bunch of green streaks on the leading edge without any extra effort. As long as they aren't on the trailing edge you're hitting down.

Every time I go to the range with a newbie, I think I'm gonna bring a dry erase marker, ha ha.

I sure could have used the towel tip a long time ago. Now I can tell without any aid whether I hit fat or not on mats.
