Ok so lately I have been really trying to pick apart my golf game and start to get my consistency a little better, my ball striking has improved quite a bit over the last year or so and this season I'm going to make an aggressive attempt to improve my game.  Lately I have noticed some major problems when I line up shots.  I noticed on almost all my shots (particularily driver) I aim significantly left of my intended target.  This causes me to hit my clubs especially my driver with an open face.

It is not a problem of picking a line usually I know where I want to hit it and line my club up but my feet if I were to put a straight line from my toes would be pointing about 10-20 yards left of intended target how can I fix this? I do this everytime I line up and can't drop a club and line up every shot.

I always, without fail, pick my target then line my club face square to the target. Once im happy that it is definatly pointing at the target i put both of my feet together so that i can see a clearly that they are square to my club, which in turn is pointing to my target, then i open them out. This stops me from aiming my feet/shoulders/hips in the wrong direction. With closed feet its easier to see a line of where your feet are in relation to the club head.

Also, check your shoulder alignment. I used to set my feet up pointing at the target but my shoulders way open (left). Subseqently i was hitting alot of fades/pull fades. Make sure your feet, hips and shoulders are all square.

Use a club as an alignment stick at the range every time you hit. Every time. It will start to feel natural to align straight. I do the same thing and the stick helps. Also, squaring the face to target, getting feet together, on line then stepping into stance helps me.

Put the clubface behind the ball and line it up.  Then set your feet.  Works for me.  I stand almost facing the target while I'm setting the clubface then step in and line my feet up parallel to that line.

What I do and I got this tip from reading Golf my Way by J.N. is to go behind my ball.  Pick out a target in front of the ball about 18" or so away.  Line the ball up with that target along your target line.  Next move up to the ball and align the club face behind the ball in line with the target you picked out in front of your ball.  Make sure all 3 are lined up correctly and then take your stance.

Now another you can do if you are aiming left if the above doesn't make sense is to approach your at a diagonal from the side of it.  So in other words if you are hitting it off line left approach the ball at more of an angle into the ball as you take your stance.  So as you face the ball if your hitting left approach from the left front quarter to the ball. A little experimentation here will help as to how much of an angle to use.  Do just the opposite if hitting it right.  thanks

I try to line up the lettering on the ball with the general direction of the intended target area when I tee it up. Then take a quick step behind the ball to make sure it's lined up reasonably close to where I want to hit it. Square the club face up with the ball at setup and away we go!

Use alignment sticks at the range to make sure you're aimed at your target.

When you're in your aligned stance, turn your head and look downrange. You see a picture with your target in a certain spot in that picture. When you take a look at that picture from your aligned stance before you hit every ball, you come to know the target belongs "right there."

When you play, set your club down behind the ball so it's pointed toward your target. Turn your head and step into the shot as you're looking downrange so the target gets to where it belongs in the picture, and there you are.

    • I honestly believe if they play longer tees by 300-400 yards, closer to or over 7,000 yards, more rough, tougher greens, women's golf will become much more gripping.  BTW, if it weren't for Scottie killing it right now, men's golf isn't exactly compelling.
    • Day 542, April 26, 2024 A lesson no-show, no-called (he had the wrong time even though the last text was confirming the time… 😛), so I used 45 minutes or so of that time to get some good work in.
    • Yeah, that. It stands out… because it's so rare. And interest in Caitlin Clark will likely result in a very small bump to the WNBA or something… and then it will go back down to very low viewership numbers. Like it's always had. A small portion, yep. It doesn't help that she lost, either. Girls often don't even want to watch women playing sports. My daughter golfs… I watch more LPGA Tour golf than she does, and it's not even close. I watch more LPGA Tour golf than PGA Tour golf, even. She watches very little of either. It's just the way it is. Yes, it's a bit of a vicious cycle, but… how do you break it? If you invest a ton of money into broadcasting an LPGA Tour event, the same coverage you'd spend on a men's event… you'll lose a ton of money. It'd take decades to build up the interest. Even with interest in the PGA Tour declining.
    • Oh yea, now I remember reading about you on TMZ!
