So, still very new to golf and ready to purchase some new clubs as the old hand me down blades I have are making a difficult time horrible for me. I have had a chance to hit several different sets now and I am really liking the cobra lines of irons that I have been able to hit so far. I have been comparing two particular sets the most, the s3 max and the amp's, as I really like the feel and look of both. I would like some input on whether I should go with the sgi(s3 max) something a little more forgiving and easier to hit or the gi(amp) something still forgiving, but a set that I may be able to grow into a bit in terms of skill. I realize that there is about a $250 difference in price between these, but I would like to make my decision based on what will get me the most out of my purchase. Thanks

GI AMP for sure

the issue with SGI clubs is they are for two typs of golfer 1) the older person who generally speaking will only get worse as they age and they need all the help and distance they can get tos till enjoy the game,.....2) the newbie who wants to shoot lower scores straight away without focusing on their technique or lessons as much

I'd go for GI clubs personally because they offer the forgiveness for you to learn the game at a decent speed, but they will still be a good club once your handicap starts to lower and your technique gets better

if you shell out a couple hundred on a set of SGI and you get hooked on golf and therefore become relatively good at it, it wont be long before your asking the same question again and shelling out another couple hundred on a more suited set

I found my clubs by talking to the Pro where I golf.  He knows me and my game (game being a very generous term for what I do on the course! ).  Once he and I worked out what would be best for me and my current state of development, we found a used set.  At first I was put off by the idea of used clubs, but seeing as how hopefully these will be temporary, until I develop more, it made sense to me to spend $130.00 for a set that were in really good shape versus spending close to $600.00 for a New set.

I was just down in your neck of the woods.  Visiting wineries and presidents homes with the wife.  Seemed like great country for golf.  Sorry to derail the thread.

I don't agree with this.  SGI clubs are not just for old people getting worse and newbies, or people that can't hit the ball.  When you 'get decent' at the game, it doesn't mean you need to get different (less forgiving) clubs.

Only each individual knows what clubs are 'suited' for them.  I've never understood the theory that if you are decent, you shouldn't play SGI irons.  I get why some people don't like tham or they aren't suited for some.  But they also work for people... even some good golfers.

I didnt say the were "only for old or noobs",...i said predominently

and i gave the OP the reasons why i feel they are catergorised for beginners and what sort of beginner buys them,.....if he is only gunna play a few times a year or every other month with buddies,...with few and far between practice sessions, then SGI clubs are a definate,....but if he's gunna get serious about it, play a few times per month and practice more than once a week, then i see no need even as a begineer for him to invest in SGI clubs? GI clubs will be fine, easy enough to hit, and when he's better they still have an amount of workability

im just thinking long term

Actually you did say they were for only those two types of golfers.  If you meant to say predominantly, ok.

I understand your argument, I just disagree with the general concept of needing, or having to get, more 'player' irons if/when you improve.  There is no way many players at all can tell a workability difference between SGI and GI clubs.

I think the OP would be better served with SGI's.  He/she is a beginner.

ah point taken, i did indeed miss "predominently" out

the workability difference between SGI and GI is smaller than the difference between players irons and SGI

I hit some PING SGI's the other day (testing a grip that was on one of the clubs),....and i couldnt believe how incredibly straight and pure i hit them,.....yet when i tried any type of workability with them i either hit it straight or hit a severe version of what i was trying.

I dont really class GI irons as players irons, although alot of the pros ar switching to them instead of blades,...

I get your point that you dont have to buy players clubs because you are good, but its the same as saying you dont have to buy SGI's cus your bad,..so why not choose the lesser of to evils and go GI?

my buddy plays ping GI to a handicap of 7,....hes switching to MB's for more workability,...yet it shows that GI clubs can get you down very low on the index

I see your point too.  I guess I get a little defensive about SGI's, especially when people say they are just for old people getting worse and newbies with no technique .

I obviously play SGI's.  I know some pretty good golfers that do as well.  I really like the feel and performance and am satisfied with the workability.  Again, I realize the feel and size of them aren't for everybody, but they give me the most confidence.  If/when I upgrade irons, I'll look at newer SGI's.  But, I guess I fall more in the category of 'casual' golfer' - a couple times a week in the summer with very limited practice.  But I also consider myself a pretty good ball striker, and I've been playing very well this year.

you play off 14 so your no slouch,....Ive been using MB's since playing off 28,...and im now down to 16 this eyar alone, hopefully i want to be down to 12 by end of the season,.....but i practice alot so i guess that helps

I didnt realise the Big B's were SGI, i saw your signature but didnt twig on :P

I think the best advice for the OP is go for a fitting session with a pro

Got a Chance to go back and hit both on the launch monitor along with the Nike mach speeds as well and I am really leaning more towards the amps. I was hitting the 7 iron out around 160(longest at 177) which is just unheard of for me, and they just seemed easier for me to hit than the other two, I really did not like how the sole on the s3 max's seemed to sort of drag off of the turf. Also the nike's hit very well, but it seemed like it was not quite A's easy to make a solid contact in the center of the club

  • 6 months later...

you might want to have a look at golf redefined.com as they have a great way to try out and demo different drivers.  drivers only unfortunately right now but love the model.  reminds me of netflix but just for drivers. maybe this will help with at least part of the decision - though you seem to want only irons - any update on your choice of irons?  just got a set of tm rocketbladz myself and loving them so far along with trying out the new ping anser from the guys at golf redefined.

goof luck!
