Bit random,.....but i noticed last night that however much i tried to keep my hands ahead of the clubhead i was blading all my wedges on short putter stroke style shots,...unless i ringed the clubs neck and held on really tight

is this normal? does it help control the clubhead more and stop it passing the hands?

Chipping with one’s hands ahead of the club head is no longer the preferred way.  Most instructors now teach amateurs to chip with the ball centered in the stance with the shaft as close to vertical as possible.  Most amateurs play with investment cast irons with bounce that does not promote a solid chipping.

Hey, you asked for advice.

If advice from Jim Flick ( A hall of fame golf instructor ) is not good enough, good luck to you.  I got the yipps while chipping last season in his advice helped me immensely.

Doesn't matter if the clubhead passes the hands as long as it doesn't before chipping. Think using your body more in chipping than your hands. You can hinge your wrist early and unhinge them, but if your just using your hands your going to have a hard time.

makes alot of sense, like a mini version of a full swing,...hinge, contact, un-hinge

but im talking more along the lines of the a putting style stroke, wooden wrists type of thing

I'm still a newbie hack, but chipping and pitching is all that saves me from complete oblivion. I do kind of a hybrid between what I picked up from Mickleson and Utley. Back with the shoulders, through with the hips, hinge and hold, and accelerate through the ball. Only time I make those chunkered ugly hate myself chips is when I'm not aggressive through the ball. Same grip as my full swing, which is actually coming together now that I'm coming at it from a "really long pitch shot" perspective.

ah cool, dont worry by the fact your a newbie,...my putting has always been my strong point and even when i was 28 handicap i had some really low digit handicap friends asking me for advice and how i approach putting, despite the rest of my game being crap

im off to the chipping sector of the range tonight with a few buddies to work on things, mostly a really nice pressure grip, not strangling it,...and also a better tempo, not fast and jerky, just 1-2 rhythm
