Just joined up here after reading some great feedback in some great threads, so hoping to get some thoughts on a direction to go.

I'm a pretty high handicap player with a relatively low swing speed (low 90s at best) and trying to decide how to get some improvement in my iron play.  Right now, I typically can hit my 5i in the 150 range and 7i in the 120 range with some consistency.

My current clubs are a set of Wilson Tour Classic (circa early 2000/late 1990s).  I'm not sure on the flex, but they are definitely steel shafts and FEEL like they may be stiff flex.  I had them fitted when I first purchased them, but they are pushing 10+ years old at this point.

My debate is whether I should consider having the checked out for possible refitting or look into a new set.  I'm on a pretty tight budget and, because I'm such a casual player, really want to keep it on the low end.  I've seen used Callaway X-14 Uniflex steel shafts for $150, but also looked at Adams Tight Lies 1012 for about the same.

I'm also wondering about recommendations on some possible older sets or other brands that, while on the budget end, can help me get more forgiveness with my irons.

Thanks in advance!

Well with clubs that old and especially with all the forgiveness that has been added in to clubs over the last 10 years I would definitely recommend a new set.  if you visit http://www.callawaygolfpreowned.com it is a great site that is authenticated too.  Check out the x18's or the big bertha line.

Also check out your local golf store (hopefully it is a non chain store) and see what kind of deals they have on clubs and maybe used clubs that they could fit you for.  Local shops are more likely to go the extra mile for you on customer service.

Thanks for the input - I've been keeping a close eye on the Callaway pre-owned site.  I just bought the Diablo driver and it's made a big difference already.  Now I'm just trying not to waste the better drives with duffs from the fairway.

One thing I'm also considering with a new set is one that replaces the 3i/4i with a hybrid as I've read they are easier to hit and more consistent than the long irons.  I've never hit one before, so have no idea, but plan on trying one when I head out shopping.

Definitely check out the local golf store for some used sets. Sometimes you can find some great deals at Play it again sports. Take a look at the Golf Digest Hot list from 2-5 years ago for some ideas http://hotlist.golfdigest.com/

For example, you can get some Adams A07os irons which have hybrids for the long irons for about $150 - 200 on ebay. These clubs were $799 in 2010 and made the Hot List Gold list http://hotlist.golfdigest.com/detail-exec/brand/2657/product_type/205/model/47648/b/Adams/p/Iron%20set/m/Idea%20a7OS%20Max

Thanks for the info on the list - I've looked and saw that both the A7 AND A3OS received Gold ratings.  I hit the A7OS 6 iron and was having "difficulty" mis-hitting that club.  Others in the running are the Taylor Made Burners (2009) and the Callaway X-14/16/18 at the right price.

Ebay seems to be a great source, but at the moment, I'm very close on an A3OS set - the only thing is that the hybrids are stiff and the irons uniflex - I know I'm a regular shaft guy, so a tad "nervous" about having stiff shaft clubs...

Definitely go with a new set... RockBottomGolf is a reputable dealer and they have some great deals on their site (for instance, the Adams Idea Tech A4 set, which has a 4h and then 5-GW, is $229).

Awards, Achievements, and Accolades

I second the adams a7os.  The set comes with hybrids in place of the 4 and 5 irons.  I think these hybrids are worth the cost of the whole set on ebay (~$200).  Once you get used to them, you will love them.  I am still developing my swing, so I have often due a 1/2 backswing.  Even with 1/2 of a backswing and a slow swing, I can get around 150 yards with the 5 hybrid.  I think you will appreciate this even more because you also have a low swing speed.  If you have trouble hitting a 4 iron, you will be amazed at how easy the 4 hybrid is to hit.  A light "grandpa" swing gives me an easy 160 yards, and I can barely get a 4 iron off the deck.

The short irons will probably take some getting used to (if you are like me).  If you are used to older irons (I played tommy armour 845s), the short irons (6,7,8,9) will feel kind of clunky.  I have only had this set for around a month and I am now really starting to get used to it.  A light swing throws the balls in the air, and a mishit at least goes towards the target with a relatively straight vector.

I ended up going with the A3 OS set, which is the 3, 4, 5 hybrids and 6-PW.  They'll be arriving this week, but too late for me to take out on my round tomorrow.  After all the input and the reviews I read about the A3's they seemed the clear choice to help me get to my goal of breaking 90.  It's been 3-4 years since I've played and have only played 9 so far, but shot a 50 my last time out...Can't wait to see what these bad boys do for me!

Thanks again for all the input!
