I'm very new to golf (only played 3 rounds of 18).  I don't have a ton of money to spend on clubs but have been doing some research on which ones to buy.  I know people say not to buy "generic" club sets, I've read good reviews of the Top Flite XL sets, does anyone know much about these or should I stay completely away from them?

My other option is to save up for a while (probably won't be able to play this year) and buy a set of irons and then driver, woods and putter.  I've narrowed this possibility down to 3 options.

A used set of Callaway X22 irons (4-PW) ~$250 USD

TaylorMade Burner Plus Irons ~$300 USD

or

Adams Golf RPM Irons ~$260 USD

Any opinions would be greatly appreciated, on either those or any others around those same prices.

Nothing wrong with buying the Top Flite set to start out with.

I would recommend even looking at some older used name brand irons.  I play the Callaway Big Bertha 2004 and they can be had for $100 - $150.

What clubs are you playing with now?

My father in law has a set of clubs that I've played the few times we've gone.  Not sure what they are, as I've just used the ones he uses and haven't really payed attention to what they were, I'm thinking they're something similar to the Top Flites though.

I picked up some generic clubs when I first started playing. I used them for a couple of years until I got better and then got fitted and had a set made for me. If you do get a cheaper generic set, I would stay away from Graphite shafts on the irons. The better quality clubs will have good quality shafts. But the cheaper ones can have some poor quality shafts. I'd stick with the steel shafts on the lower end stuff.

I just started looking at clubs the other day. I was looking for a cheap set to start off on and I ended up getting the TaylorMade Burner Plus irons at Carl's GolfLand: http://www.carlsgolfland.com/shop/taylormade-burner-plus-irons.html?&green;=7C815F4E-883B-5483-0646-343A7AC8D1E5

I really do like the irons they feel great and are at a good price for beginners.

Since I wanted to build a club set for under $800 i ended up getting:

*TaylorMade Burner SuperFast Driver @ $119 in store: http://www.carlsgolfland.com/shop/taylormade-burner-superfast-driver.html?&green;=7C815F4E-883B-5483-0646-343A7AC8D1E5

*TaylorMade Burner SuperFast 3 Wood @ $99: http://www.carlsgolfland.com/shop/taylormade-burner-superfast-fairway-woods.html?&green;=7C815F4E-883B-5483-0646-343A7AC8D1E5

*TaylorMade Burner SuperFast 3 Hybrid/Rescue @ $79: http://www.carlsgolfland.com/shop/taylormade-burner-superlaunch-rescue-hybrid-club.html

*TaylorMade Pure Light stand bag @ $109: http://www.carlsgolfland.com/shop/taylormade-pure-lite-2.0-stand-bag-2011.html

I would recomend going to a local golf store and trying the clubs if possible.

Listen up, go to your local "savers" second hand store and check the sporting goods section, I scored an original muscle backed Ben Hogan set of irons 2-9 with Apex shafts and a callaway hickory stick 59 degree sand wedge for 2 bucks apiece, and not the knock off 80's version of the irons. Also in the bin was a wilson Sam Snead Blue Ridge edition 59 degree sand wedge, grabbed that too for 2 bucks. The clubs after cleaning were in excellent shape, and with a coupon I paid 18 bucks for the whole kit and kaboodle, someone had donated the set, and I was in the right place at the right time.

If you're going classic Callaway, try for some X20 irons. They're a bit easier to  hit, and they have a brush nickel finish that won't show bag wear like the chromy X22s.

I ended up getting the Adam's Tight Lies set.  Has a Driver, 3&5 Woods, 4 Hybrid, 5-SW and a putter.  I'm supplementing it with a Nike VR 3 Hybrid and a couple of old Tom Watson 3 and 4 irons I already have or picking up the Adam's Redline 3 and 4 irons on ebay.
