How much are you looking to spend because the Callaway X-Tours are rediculously nice.

There are a few sets that I would suggest trying out.

Mizuno MX-25
Callaway X-20 or X-20 Tour (The tours have less offset and are more workable)
Titleist 775 or 755 (The 775's are more forgiving and the 775's more workable)
Cleveland CG2 (The CG1's probably don't offer enough forgiveness for a 17 handicapper)
Nike CCI (I've heard the forged version feels better but have not personally tried either set.)
Ping G5

It also depends on how much you want to spend. The Clevelands are a little cheaper than the others. Anyway the best idea is to visit a place where you can try the clbs and see what you like the best.

I really like my MX-25's. I really like the forged feel and it's nice with the cavity back and thin top line.

Those have a really thick cavity back. Those are nice but Im not really sure if thats what he's looking for. I think he's looking for more of a blade type iron. something like these.

I just sold off my Taylormade Rac LT II, which had a thin top line but reasonable amount of cavity, and was going to switch to Callaway X-20 tour . I tried the X20 tour for a few swings and I immediately returned the clubs to the store. First PXF was not to my likings (but you might like it), the thick top line actually did not help coming from Rac LTII, and could not feel a thing when ball was struck. Tried the X-Forged as well and it really looks nice but the performance wasn't really that great.

r7TP is an awesom club as long as your club does not have to be "forged" but I just realized how much you would be missing not using a forged club. However, I was longer using this clubs and the face was more forgiving. I guess if you are looking to increase distance this would be a good choice also.

755s are really nice too except I didn't like the trispec shaft but you can always custom order from Titleist. They are quite forgiving and distance is average.

I settled for Mizuno MP60s. Quite forgiving, distance was good, control was excellent, balance was perfect, baby butt soft forged feel and great looks at address. I went with the DG S300 Sensicore and it really feels sweet. Besides I wanted to progress with my game further so thought that this would be a good choice.

After months and months of research to get a new set of irons I came to my decision about irons. My personal likings were (in order):

1. Mizuno MP60
2. Mizuno MP32
3. Taylormade r7 TP
4. Taylormade Rac LTII (My previous iron)
5. Mizuno MP67 (Ranked 5th because it was unforgiving but good shots were rewarded)
7. Taylormade RAC TP MB and CB.
8. Callaway X-Forged
9.Cobra Carbon CB
10. Titleist 755
11. Callaway X20 Tour

These were just my rankings but you should try out as many as possible to find out for yourself. Also, RAC LTII was supposed to be classified as player's irons but I first started golf with those sets (when I was scoring 120-130) so I guess you don't really have to be a "player" to own one of those. I got down to mid 80s with RAC LT II before I switched to MP60. Have fun going through the iron selection!

I have a set of Cleveland CG Reds that I've got to review. After I get the pictures and play a few rounds, you're welcome to try them out.

Failing that, you could have a look at my r7 TPs and play a round with 'em to see how you like them. They're standard lie/length (both are).

I am a huge fan of KZG Irons. The evolution series forged irons might fit your requirements. Cavity backs for the long irons and blades for the short irons. KZG equipment is affordable and must be fitted for you by an authorized fitter.

Take a look at http://www.kzgolf.com/ * Progresses from Mid-Size Cavity to Blade * Classic Appearance, Modern Performance * The Perfect Blended Set The Forged Evolution irons give each head its own unique design because a players needs vary from club-to-club. With a perimeter weighted cavity-back in the 2-iron; the emphasis gradually shifts from game-improvement to playability and control in the mid irons, ending with an exquisite muscleback blade wedge. It is the perfect progressive set with each iron 10% different from each adjoining iron. Most manufacturers only vary their blended sets by only 3 club increments.

    • My two cents? Don't. As a beginner that's interested in learning about the golf swing, you'll find yourself consuming a lot of information, most of which isn't even relevant to your own swing. You need to learn you can't think your way to a good golf swing. Focus on the one thing that you're working on and doing that on every swing, come what may. And remember, mishits happen.
    • Day 6 (7 May 24) - More work in the backyard focused on tempo in addition to setup.  Worked with 6 and 7 irons hitting hard foam balls - used the old MacGregor irons to mix it up a little.
    • No! lol. But they have to be in the right sequence to play mid-handicap golf or little better. Mostly. And even in that there is range/margin for error in the motions and positions that most normal humans can handle. It helps if you have a decent idea of how a golf club moves around the body like you would any other equipment sports (baseball and hockey might be the closest) After all, fairways are 40 yards wide. Don't overthink it. Be diligent in getting basics right. I will concede that it is harder than it sounds but it certainly is not exact angle/exact position/exact degree of bend/exact speed/exact facial expression, etc, every.... single.... time or the result is horrible death.
    • Looking to play in the Severna Park Golf league and it got rained out the first three weeks. I know the course is being renovated so it is not in great shape but the location is easy for me and I would love to meet some other golfers in my area. Anyone here in Maryland Annapolis area?
    • I like to look at the positives.  Overall you are fairly consistent down the center with most shots 20 yards or less off center.  On most fairways that should be in play.  Sure, you had some very short duds, but also if you look there is a good cluster in the 110-125 yard range.  Sure, we would all like to be longer, but knowing your typical shot is more important than trying to hit the 7-Iron 175 Yards.  Just take more club for longer shots and do not worry about it.  Your distances may increase as you improve over time so do not get caught up on that now.
