HI guys, I have now done some extensive research of what my next set of irons should be. Looking to upgrade from my current Nike Slingshots 2010 version once I hit 18 handicap.

I have currently looked into 4 sets which have really caught my eye and I can't seem to get my head around which one would be best! Once I have made the choice, I will seriously be considering getting them custom fit to my game.....

The choices are (drum roll please..........)

Titleist AP1's

Taylor Made RocketBladez

Callaway X-Hot

Nike VR Pro Combos

Would appreciate your views and feedback from any of you who currently use any of the above to TRY and make me decision a little bit easier!

You are going about it the wrong way. You do a custom fitting to find what clubs and shaft works best for you, don't pick a random one and then get fit. Ideally, you should find a custom fitter where you can try them out and find the combination of shaft and clubhead that works best for you. If you don't want to spend money on fitting, at least hitting them all is better than a blind buy. I got fit myself for X-Hot Pro some weeks ago and the difference between the clubs and shafts was quite significant. I feel a lot more confident after having tried different brands and shafts.

I completely agree with Zeph. Get fitted and let that decide which club fits you best, not the other way around.

But just my personal opinion, the AP1s are a waste. Either spring for the AP2s or buy a different club. I found the AP1s to be dead feeling. Never could judge where the ball was on the face at impact. The only other club I've hit from your list are the Callaways. And again, wasn't very impressed when comparing it to other manufacturers' irons.

With that said, you need to hit them yourself and make the ultimate decision. I know a few guys who love their AP1s.

What I did was go for a fitting and tell him the ones you are interested in but say you're open to trying out any other ones as well.  I told the guy I was most interested in Cobras just because I recently got a new Cobra driver and I like how Cobras look but I ended up hitting the Ping's much better and more consistently so I bought those

    • Eh. He broke ONE of Tiger's records. Youngest to be ranked #1 in AJGA. It didn't help that Tiger's birthday is in late December, or that Tiger didn't play many AJGA events before he was 15. Did he do any of these things? TIGER WOODS' AMATEUR VICTORIES YEAR WIN(S) 1984 10-and- under Junior World Golf Championships Boys    1985 10-and- under Junior World Golf Championships Boys    1988 Boy's 11-12 Junior World Golf Championships   1989 Boy's 13-14 Junior World Golf Championships   1990 Boy's 13-14 Junior World Golf Championships, Insurance Youth Golf Classic   1991 U.S. Junior Amateur, Boys 15–17 Junior World Golf Championships, Orange Bowl International Junior Look at some other AJGA Players of the Year. How many of these names do you recognize? A few, for sure. I assure y'all, I'm not trying to pee in your Cheerios. I just don't get what the point is. Okay. I get that, then. Thanks.
    • Day 56: 4/19/2024 Okay, even though I'll be teeing it up in a tournament in less than a week. I couldn't find time to get to the range today.  I spent time on the indoor putting mat.  And I spent time in front of the mirror with my 7 iron. Then again later with the driver.  I also thoroughly cleaned all my clubs.
    • Just stumbled onto the article.  Totally random and thought it might be interested to hear other thoughts. maybe I am tired of all the LIV crap and  this just caught my attention.
    • Day 1: Spent some time hitting some balls. Working on my hips and a “soft” and straight trail arm.
    • Slight digression on the way to my point. Back in the day there were a lot of people who said that Tiger won because of “the Tiger effect” where people pushed too hard and made mistakes trying to catch him and fell by the wayside. I thought that was BS. It was just that he was that much better than them. I don’t think anything has changed my mind on that.    The hype about Miles Russell is very limited. I’ve seen nothing about him outside of some fairly hardcore golf websites. But I think that the reason those people are talking about him is because he is very good. Same as Tiger. And like I said he just broke one of Tiger’s records. That gets hardcore golf fans to pay attention.
