I bought a set of used clubs from CallawayPreOwned last year. They were a good set for the price and I have enjoyed them.

About a month ago, while warming up, my PW broke. the shaft broke inside the head. I let them know, and since I was still under the 1-year warranty, they paid shipping for me to return the club and have a new shaft installed. They were really great through the whole process.

A week or so later, I noticed my 5 iron had come loose and was spinning around on the shaft. I was afraid to hit it as it could come off any time. I let Callaway know, and once again they took care of it and installed a new shaft once again.

Now, I went to the range this weekend and my 7 iron broke off the same way that my PW had. I contacted Callaway and hope to have them fix it as well since my warranty should be good for a few more weeks, but this has me concerned. They are a slightly older set of X-16 irons but this seems odd for the shafts to all be breaking like this.

Any recommendations on what I should do? I am afraid that another one will break next month and then it won't be under warranty. I play once a week at the most so it's not like I put crazy wear and tear on these clubs, and I do leave a decent divot at times but that seems like it shouldn't matter.

This happened to me as well on several clubs (Btw, not from Callaway).

I was told my a club fitter that the adhesive (epoxy) from the factory is a quick setting one, and the temperature in the trunk of a car can get to about 70C (or higher) around here and the epoxy begins to soften.

The only cure is to use the slower curing kind that he uses in the store or that you can buy (it will say it has a usable temperature of something like 200C or more).

Interesting. I do keep my bag in my truck a lot, either in my back seat or sometimes in the bed under a cover. Maybe I need to make a point to keep them cooler. Thanks for mentioning that!

Here's a graphic regarding the summer temperature inside car trunks.

http://i.imwx.com/activities/driving/drivingsafetytips/car5.jpg

Also, the breaking point for quick-dry epoxy is about 230* F. So, you won't lose shaft epoxy from keeping your clubs in a hot trunk. BUT... it can deteriorate the club grips and the golf balls, and does no good for leather shoes and gloves.

Also, the golf club OEMs don't use quick-set epoxy in the factory. Among other things, quick-set slows down the assembly process. Go figure...

If the shafts are actually breaking off - not just coming loose - there's a chance the iron shafts picked up some internal rust over the years.

Sure enough, I looked up Devcon 5 minute epoxy cured service temperature is from -40F to 200F. I wonder if there is rapid aging due to temperature changes? In any case, I leave it up to the club maker who told why my clubs failed. So far, the clubs he fixed have not failed yet.

Thanks for the info. On my 5 iron, the shaft actually was loose and the club head was spinning around and starting to come off. With my PW and 7 iron, the shaft actually broke off. It was really strange. I'm hoping this is the last one, since my warranty runs out soon.

Yes, I feel your concern. Are your shafts graphite or steel?

Play all of them hard before your warranty runs out.

Seems a bit odd. Either a bad batch of glue or the previous owners left them in the car for long periods of time on hot days. I would not be surprised if asked Callaway would reglue the whole set just to be safe.

But after I thought about it, it couldn't have been the glue on the 7 or the PW. Unless the glue somehow contracted and squeezed the shaft and made it weak. The shafts literally broke off, with part of it still inside the club head.

I'd ring Callaway and put in some sort of ticket so when more of the clubs break nthey will fix them. They might even offer to preemptively reshaft the whole set if you get lucky.

I would send them back to Callaway to re-glue and re-shaft all the ones that look suspicious.

I'm going to have to call them. I emailed them a few days ago and surprisingly haven't gotten a response. They've always been quick to respond other times. I'm gonna see if I can get them to do this. I like my irons a lot but really don't want to pay for all new shafts in old irons like this.

I think you should be good. Callaway replaced a shaft in my wife's Solaire 6 hybrid a couple times, they were very responsive.

Here's the pathway to internal shaft rust that I had mentioned before:

  • In winter weather, the golfer puts his clubs in the trunk of his car, plays below freezing, and then goes home.
  • He takes the clubs out of his car, and brings them into the warm house. The temperature change causes the metal of the shafts to sweat, creating an environment which could promote internal rust.
  • If the golfer does this several times from December to February, internal shaft rust can result.

The military deals with a similar problem. In winter operations, infantry units generally keep their weapons outside their warm sleeping tents. Bring the weapons inside the tents, and the temperature change causes the metal to sweat. Take it outside, and you get an icecap on and inside the weapon mechanism that can lead to misfires.

Wow....I emailed them Monday bout the 7 iron and hadn't heard back, so I emailed again yesterday and also mentioned how many have had problems.

Today they responded and said they will send me a pre-paid label and would like to replace the entire set since I have had so many problems. That's incredible. It will suck to be without my clubs for a week or two but that's incredible for them to do.

Once again, I am very impressed by the customer service from

Can someone point me to contacting Callaway? My 8 Iron is warped somehow (it has not been in a car trunk).

    • I did read the fine print tonight. It said replace with “similar features & function”.  8 yeas ago my purchase had features that today are available on the lower end models and the current version of my model has more “bells & whistles” than what I got 8 years ago.  So I am thinking they honored the agreement and I can’t argue the offer. since getting a credit for the full purchase price all I am really out over the past 8 years was the cost of the extended warranty, which was less than a low end  treadmill would have cost me. now the question is which model to replace with.  I’ll stay with Nordic Track or I forfeit the $1,463 credit so I will get Nordic Track.  And they honored the warranty and were not hard to work with which is a plus.
    • Generally speaking, extended warranties are a terrible deal and should almost always be avoided. They are a huge profit center for the companies that offer them, which should tell you almost everything you need to know about how much value most consumers get when purchasing them.  This is correct, and the old adage applies - only buy insurance when you can't afford the loss. This usually doesn't apply to most consumer goods.  To your second question, no I don't believe the offer is fair. They are replacing it, but it is not being replaced at "no cost to you". Since the amount being disputed (over $500) is non-trivial, I would probably push the issue. Don't waste your time on the phone with a customer service agent or a supervisor. They have probably given you all they have the authority to do. Rather, I would look at the terms of your agreement and specifically legal disputes. The odds are you probably agreed to binding arbitration in the event of a dispute. The agreement will outline what steps need to be followed, but it will probably look something like this.  1. Mail the Nordic Track legal department outlining your dispute and indicate you are not satisfied with the resolution offered.  2. Open up a case with the AAA (American Arbitration Association), along with the required documentation. 3. Wait about 4-5 weeks for a case to be opened - at which point someone from Nordic Track's legal department will offer to give you the new model at no cost to you.  They certainly don't want to spend the time and energy to fight you over $500. 4. Enjoy your new Nordic Track at no cost to you. I recently entered binding arbitration against a fairly large and well known company that screwed me over and refused to make it right. In my demand letter, I made a pretty sizeable request that included compensation for my time and frustration. Once it hit their legal department, they cut me a check - no questions asked. It was far cheaper to settle with me than to send their legal team to defend them in the arbitration.
    • I never thought of looking at it on multiple purchases like you said.  Yes, the extended may help me on 1 or 2 items but not the other 5 or 6.
    • Day 84 - Forgot to post yesterday, but I did some more chipping/pitching.    Back/neck were feeling better today, so I did a much overdue Stack session.
