What are your fears and frustrations?

Hi, 

 

I'm a former professional athlete and now a mental performance coach for athletes. 

 

I'm curious to hear what are the challenges, the fears and frustrations, doubts, worries, anxieties you are facing when training and performing so I can better serve athletes like you.

 

If you have years of experience under your belt, what fears and frustrations did you face earlier in your life and please share what mental tricks you've figured out or heard people using how to mentally overcome those challenges?

I'm too new to this game for it to make me nervous, maybe if I was better at it...

 

Also, the only time I get nervous playing something is during a competition (not necessarily golf).  Some of the ways I mitigate it are 1.) having tournament experience, having a history of winning and placing high so I know it can be done, 2.)  recognizing luck is a major part of any competition and putting myself in a position to get lucky at every possible turn.

Any tips for hack golfers?

Sometimes you have those days when your swing is not right but you don't know what is wrong or what to do to fix it. It's like you forgot how to play golf. The anxiety is that your swing will never return. Usually a few days off to clear all the swing thoughts out of your mind will fix it. But who would want to take a few days off from golf? So, that's the problem.

I fear the achievement plateau. I truly believe that with time and effort I can continue to get better. I think I'd cry if I got to the point of being a twelve or so handicap and someone told me that is all I have in the tank. I am starting this golf journey late in life (I am 35 and started playing a few months ago).

My golf fear?  Running out of money before i get to H'cap 12.

I expect a variation of this to happen to me eventually.  It's a game of physics, there will be (or more accurately, already is) a time when I will be physically unable to make a play that is required during the course of a game, like hitting the green on a 690 yard par 5 in 3 or whatever.  I liken it to being 5 feet tall and realizing you will never dunk a basketball.  Ha  It kinda makes me not even want to play the game actually, but obviously there are other reasons to play.. enjoying the summer, hanging with friends, meeting new people, etc.

My golf fear...being "that guy."  Too bad, too slow, lost too many balls, etc.
