My Club Fitting Experience

Had a great experience at the local golf complex for my scheduled club fitting session yesterday. I went in with the Mizuno MP-64's and Titleist AP2's as the front runners for my next set of irons, but let the fitter know up front that I was open any recommendations as I just wanted to get the best set for my game. After warming up, the fitter let me swing the shaft optimizer and we settled in on True Temper DGX-100 shaft, which I love by the way. My 6 iron swing speed was 92-93, and this shaft fit my swing very well. I have a pretty quick tempo, and I was able to load this shaft properly as well as get a very pleasant ball flight with all of the clubs. After hitting the 64's and AP2's, I felt confident that I would definitely go with one of those two, but I also hit the Titleist CB's, the MP4's, and the MP-54's as well. The fitter and I both agreed that the 64's and AP2's seemed to suit me the best, so then the decision was basically up to me between those two. Here are my observations between those two models. Mizuno MP-64's: They are everything you would expect a Mizuno players iron to be. I have never played Mizuno's, but instantly noticed the feel that everyone raves about with Mizzy's. Well struck shots seemed to fly off the face, and accompanied with the DGX-100 shaft I was getting an excellent ball flight. The forgiveness was about what I expected it to be, or maybe slightly more forgiving tha expected. Titleist AP2's: Really liked these clubs as well, and once again was able to achieve a nice flight with them. The feel of these irons was much softer than I expected, but it was almost an awkward soft to me. When I struck a ball right in the sweet spot, they felt even softer than the 64's, but it was too soft for my liking if that's possible. I felt like some of the "springiness (?)" was gone, and the ball wasn't launching off of face as much as it should. Distance-wise the results didn't really back up my feelings because I was getting good distance out of them, but the feel just seemed like the club face was trying to swallow the ball instead of launching it. I almost liked the feel of slight mishits better than catching one square in the middle (I'm talking the tiniest of mishits, nothing drastic. Just millimeters away from the center.) They offered a little more forgiveness on significant mishits than the 64's did. I did ask if I should try any brands outside of Mizuno and Titleist, but he said that he honestly felt that I picked the two best models for my skill level, and that he didn't feel there was a better set of irons than those two in that particular category. At the end of the day, I settled on the Mizuno MP-64's. I felt like they gave me everything I wanted and suited my game very well. The AP2's were right there with them, and I hit a ton of shots to come to my final conclusion. Just something about puring an AP2 didn't settle well with me like it did with the 64. So I am now the proud new owner of a brand spanking new set of Mizzy 64's in 4-PW. Since I didn't feel like I had spent enough money yet, I also ordered 3 new Vokey wedges (50, 54, 60) in the black nickel finish. Also ordered a Sun Mountain C-130 cart bag in Royal/Gray/Citron color. First World problems....

I certainly didn't mean to come across as boastful. Was just excited about getting new equipment and wanted to share with my fellow golfers. My irons and wedges are about 7 years old. The irons were fit for me when I was a sophomore in high school so the shafts are waaaay too soft now and I went from a club that was cut 1" short to a club that's a half inch longer and 2 degrees upright.

Awesome!  Congrats on the new sticks.  I was in the same boat when I was getting my last set of irons, and I really liked both the Mizunos and the AP2's.  In the end, I felt that my mishits were a little more forgiving with the Titleist, or maybe it was the fact that I worked at a golf course and my boss was a Titleist rep so I got the whole set for under $600 with a Vokey Wedge!

Good call on the bag as well.  It will match the blue Mizzy's quite nicely.  Make sure to post some pics!
