Hey guys wondering your opinion on something. Do you think the irons you play make a difference as far as quality is concerned? I have the Top-Flite tour irons stiff, would like to eventually switch to the x-18's. Will it make that much of a difference and if so how come?

Finn: Anything you change, equipment-wise, can make a huge difference in your game if it fits you better than what you were using before. By "fit" I mean both the design of the product and how it works with your swing and ability.

The best thing I can suggest is to go to a PGA Professional (at a golf course or a Golfsmith/Edwin Watts-type superstore) and have them do a custom fitting session with you. From that, they can make suggestions as to what type of clubs you should be playing, and how they should be customized (shaft flex, grip size, set makeup, etc).

You might find that your swing/skill level would improve with lighter graphite shafts and a more forgiving club design, or maybe you'd be better off with steel shafts and a smaller, more blade-like club design. Trust the experts to give you some good advice. It will cost you some money ($50 is a good ballpark), but usually they'll put that toward a purchase if you buy clubs from their shop. And if you get clubs that fit your game, you'll find that is money well-spent!

That's my suggestion. Let us know what you decide, and good luck.

Yes, equipment makes a difference. However, it's still how well you hit the ball. 2nd hand stores are filled with nearly new equipment because too many golfers are looking for a panacea. If you don't hit the ball well, new technology will be MORE forgiving but won't suddenly make you hit rockets.

In addition, so much of the game is mental. If you believe in a certain club, you will hit it better.

I agree, lots of types of clubs for lots of type of golfers,, But custom fitting of what every type you like means you know the club is not the problem and you can concentrate on your swing.. Also it has been shown the worse the golfer the more custom fitting helps.

I don't think the quality of the irons (nor balls for that matter) make much difference at all at the amateur level. I bought at set of super-used King Snake irons for $70 (incl. the bag). The grips are old and I shot a 79 today (with an old beat up Titleist DT). I can hit the 7-iron 190 yds with consistency. For the amateur player, clubs just don't matter that much IMO. Save your money.
