I dunno why there seems to be a lot of McIlroy in the media lately, I guess it's warming up, people are thinking about the Masters and McIlroy is now a workout monster. If you following golf in general, you've probably already read most of what's in this piece. What I didn't know was that his father took a hands off approach, anti helicopter parent attitude when he was 7. Also McIlroy had to practically beg Bannon to travel on the tour with him. And he wrote a letter to Woods saying, I'm coming for ya. Not convinced that the sound his thwack makes is different than that of Watson or DJ.

Quote:
But Gerry’s greatest contribution may have been the decision he made when Rory was 7 to take a step back from his son’s golf education.

“I remember the day he did it,” Bannon told me. He brought Gerry and Rory to the back of the shop. “Rory was playing with a set of golf clubs that were far too long for him. They were up under his arms. I cut a big chunk off the top of them.” He put on new grips and then handed the clubs back. Gerry said: “That’s O.K. I’m handing him over to you. That’s it. You look after him.”
