I for an unknown random reason have always been a lover of snake eyes, probably because I like the better service you get with smaller brands.

Anyway my question is what are the drivers and woods like compared to the likes of titleist, taylormade etc etc

Need good answers as im interested in their other clubs, but would like honest reviews.

Thanks, Jay

Overall, IMHO, the manufacturing quality of the GolfSmith components is as good as the big, name brand clubs. Some of their designs seem a little quirky, but a number of their club designs are excellent.

If you're OK with not having one of the big name brands, I'd suggest finding a good clubmaker/fitter and letting him custom build a set of clubs for you (which he can do with the snake eyes brand) instead of buying a pre-made set. You'll end up with a custom set that FOR YOU will be far superior to any of the off-the-shelf, big name brand set.

Sorry Jay but I havent tried the woods. If the 600 iron series are an indicator, as you already know, than I'm sure that there woods are of equal quality. Thing I like about the Snake eyes is that you can get a high end shaft and the head for less than you can get the OEM stuff with there stock shafts. Really arent Driver heads now maxed out for size at 460 and COR at 0.83 so what could the difference be anyway. MOI is the only thing left and even that seems to be going to strange places with the ugly looking square, triangle and Hex shape heads. (sorry you were looking at the Mamba - thats as ugly as they come)

If you get one I would suggest the Viper Ti Tour Black. It seems to be the latest and greatest with the three movable weights (nice tradional look). Let me know how you make out.

The mamba is beyond ugly, but its got a higher MOI than the Nike sasqautch sumo2 which can't be bad, and your right about the price and shaft combination, its a lot better.

OK, I know I went overboard but I wanted to know more about this up and coming company that fell off the map and did some research. Here is some history along with my impressions.

I think that Snake Eyes missed the boat in the late 90s when they actually had 14 people they sponsored on various tours. Their wedges were gaining popularity and were being seen more and more in tour players' bags. The brand was catching on but they must have had some management problems and they fell off. Shortly after Golfsmith picked them up as kind of an in-house brand. Snake Eyes pre-1998 had its own sales force and marketed to green-grass (pro-shops) operations.

I remember the wedges coming out and I had a few friends that played them. They had a great logo and with some different direction at the time, they could have been much more of a force in the marketplace. They were tour quality. Now, Golfsmith has taken a company that had a good basis and found a niche for it in their stores and compenent sales. Golfsmith also owns Lynx and Killer Bee.

Here is a list of their tour players from 96

All Time Rank Tour Term of
Name Tour as of 11/25/95(1) Wins Contract

Leonard Thompson PGA Tour 112 3 1/95-12/96

Lennie Clements PGA Tour 121 0 6/95-12/96

Mark Carnevale PGA Tour 236 1 1/95-12/96

Billy Kratzert PGA Tour 142 4 1/95-12/96

Andy Bean PGA Tour 53 11 4/95-3/97

Doug Tewell PGA Tour 76 4 1/95-12/96

John Mahaffey PGA Tour 37 10 6/95-6/97

Jim Hallett PGA Tour 175 0 1/95-12/96

Mark Hayes PGA Tour 107 3 9/95-8/96

Clark Dennis PGA Tour 245 0 1/95-12/96

Skip Kendall PGA Tour 336 0 2/95-12/96

Bruce Devlin Senior PGA 64 9 6/95-5/98
Tour

Bob Dickson Senior PGA 89 2 1/95-12/96
Tour

Frank Roberson Gold Coast N/A 0 6/95-5/97
Tour

So to give you a perspective, they are a quality company that at one time had tour presence. I think that if you can pick your shaft and the right head, then you will get a quality driver for a great price.

Great reply, interesting to know about the history of the company, judging by the quality of their irons I believe they could make a resurgence on tour.

I will try the woods out within the next week and report back on their performance.

Edit: I like the mamba, Think it looks a bit quirky and original, and it has a higher MOI than the new Nike Sumo.

Another guy that used the Golfsmith line was Scott Verplank - From an Article

PGA touring professional Scott Verplank played the 2001 season with Golfsmith Forged irons, Snake Eyes Forged wedges, Golfsmith "Extreme Steel" 3 and 5 metal woods and a Snake Eyes Fire Forged driver. He finished 10th on the 2001 PGA money list with over $2.7 million US in earnings. Verplank won the 2001 Bell Canadian Open. Ryder Cup Captain Curtis Strange hand-picked Verplank to join the 2001 U.S. Ryder Cup team.

hmm its all looking good for snake eyes then, I might ask for some sort of equipment sponsorship of sorts from my local club fitter, as in a discount on products in exchange for spreading the word of his ability.

This wouldn't be asking as a 5 handicapper though, I am in essence a lot better as I have not handed in a card all winter, have only been playing 3 years (2 years competitively) and am 17 (5 is awful for my age I know lol)

Do you think this is a possibility? has anyone on this forum we know of been in a similar situation?

I was actually thinking of custom making a new 3 wood with their new black headed driver and woods.

The fact that you can get a shaft(the most important thing), and a good quality head for 150 dollars is far superior to a stock shaft on a big name OEM

Driver:10 degree HS9 F speed Stock Regular
FW: 15 degree sasquatch stiff
906F4 18.5 V2 proforce stiff
Hybrid: 21 585H V2 Proforce stiff
Irons: Cobra Fp 4-PW Nippon StiffWedges: CG12 56 degree Wedge Flex Putter: Rossa agsi+ Daytona 1 35"

I had a couple Snake Eyes woods before got my newer stuff with a nice discount. I had the older Python titanium Driver and 3 and 5 woods. I put shafts from Graphite Design in them. Very nice clubs, just moved to the new things because I got a huge discount on them. I also just built a new Snake Eyes hybrid for myself to replace my 4 iron. So far, so good, but there's quite a bit of snow on the ground here so I haven't had a chance to hit it much yet.

New Driver Ordered
New 3 Wood Ordered
Two New Hybrids Ordered

I’m all Snake Eyes stuff – forged irons now, although started with their cast stuff which were quite nice. Everyone I know thinks SE makes good equipment. The Mamba was an exception, a POS, at least the first version. Even I’m too good for that thing w/ a 14 Index. Got a new Viper TI Tour Black 3W a few months back and love it, enough to be wanting to try the 1W. Clubs are hard to compare, expecially w/ shaft variations. Last week I hit a friends R7 driver alongside my SE600T, repeatedly boomed out an easy, extra 25 yds. Now I suppose I’ll have to try to find out if that was a fluke or a discovery. Maybe 400 bucks worth of discovery? In any case, I'd say go down to a Golf Smith and test out a few SE woods - you've nothing to lose.

My 14 Clubs
1W TM R1
3W 5W TM RBZ pro
P-4 Irons Mizuno MP54
