Club Championship - Round 1


I started with a birdie and ended with birdie. .. In between was total, unrelenting horse shit.

The whole plan this weekend was to hit the 3W off the tee. It seemed ok on the range in my warm up, I got away with a push on No.1 and made birdie with really solid 5W and 8I shots. Then everything fell apart. Went OB three times before I started hitting the 5W off the floor. Ended up with a 102.

True to advertised, these guys who entered this Club Championship are definitely players. The board was almost all 70s and 80s. Some poor bastard in the senior divisions shot a 91 and still beat me by 11.

I can't get off the tee and that's most of it. All the penalty strokes (4 if I remember right) were off the tee. This past two weeks I tried to work with the 3W and actually felt ok about it until the fourth hole. Then it all dissolved. Thought now is just hitting 5W off the floor like I did on 18.

For what its worth, I kept my pace, held my temper ok and my partners were very nice. Got em a beer on No. 19.

I got a real god-damned problem hitting a ball off a tee. I'll just try to make the best of it tomorrow and do the best I can.

The result is not what you wanted but you are out there competing and keeping your cool.  Tomorrow break 90 or at least give it a go.

    • I’d go with the Titleist if you liked the look of the blades but were suffering with distance. They should be a little more forgiving than a full blade and still retain some workability. Also remember to consider the shafts each have as this will be a big contributor to how they feel. Clemsonfan is right though… get fit or spend a bit of time on a launch monitor 🤙
    • Day 28: 2026.01.30 Managed to make time for a few swings out back today. Need a proper bit of range time this weekend.
    • Day 30, 1/30.  Six minutes this morning hitting a few more range balls, indoors, off a mat, into the net.  Did this before leaving the house.

    • Hi All my New Year’s resolution was to start playing golf again. I’ve caught the bug and am really enjoying hitting balls at a couple of my local ranges.looking forward to getting back out on courses in the spring. Based in the UK and 38 years old, I’ve been playing since I was a kid. Best handicap I’ve held is 2 in my mid 20s. Over the past 10 years I’ve played once or twice a year, sometimes with friends or for work. Could shoot 4-5 over, but just as easily shoot 15-20 over. I’ve moved to South Wales and am very lucky to be near some world class links courses, which gives me even more motivation to get playing again! I will start looking for a local coach in my area when I have more time to invest, but I recalled scouring this forum a few years ago and finding some good tips and advice so wanted to give it a try to see if there were any glaring issues I could fix in the meantime!  A few swings below… one from 1st week Jan and one from today. I have fixed my P1 takeaway to my liking and am now working on what I see as pretty severe early extension & hip thrust. Also terrible hip rotation. I’d like confirmation that this is indeed a problem and and suggestions on a few good drills.
