During the winter I practice putting using a metal yard stick.   I believe in it.   Is there a "thing" technique to practice distance control during the winter?

I don’t know if you can practice distance control like to hitting the ball actual distances unless you have some kind of putting green to work on, but you can certainly do things to work on your stroke that will improve your distance control, like your acceleration profile.

Like what @billchao said, I'd work on your dynamics/acceleration profile. Put marks down and make sure you're comfortable swinging back and forth to them about the same distance, with good tempo/rhythm.

If you have a putting mat, you can tape some strings across it and roll it up against a wall or clip it up against a few milk crates or something to create the ability for you to hit longer putts and see if they "finish" at the same place relative to the lines than you could if you just lay the putting mat flat.
