I've been Playing Golf for 6 years
My current handicap index or average score is 8
My typical ball flight is a high draw
The shot I hate or the "miss" I'm trying to reduce/eliminate is thin toe strikes and occasional shanks

I know my swing is flat but I more dislike the raising and moving away of my hands at takeaway. I sometimes struggle with getting turf after the ball and think this is because I stand up on the way down but could be wrong. Any help appreciated because I’ve never had a lesson.

the first couple videos are my swing going well and the third is an example of when it falls apart.

Welcome to the forum!  I can't give you any constructive advice about your golf swing, but can say you have a really scenic spot to hit balls.  Is that an actual course or just an open field somewhere?

Hey! Thanks for the welcome. It’s a small 9 hole course near to me with some

of the best views you’ll ever get on a course, it only has one volunteer green keeper but still fun to go round!

Am uploading a couple of different angles in slow mo as I know thanks to my overly fast tempo it’s difficult to even see what’s going on in real time 😑 not sure if camera was perfectly placed for face on but better than nothing!

Welcome to The Sand Trap. It would help if you filmed in slow motion and gave us a face on view.

It would help if you could:

  • Adjust the stance a bit so you weren't so far into your heels.
  • Swing more upright. I don't mind the closed face so much, but you're VERY shallow with the lead arm and you're going to fight swinging out a lot with that type of motion.

Hey Iacas, thanks for the input. I think the weight on my heels at set up is due to a tendency I have to get my weight on my toes on the way down which can lead to some hosel rockets 😂 but I agree it doesn’t look fully athletic or comfortable and am trying to work on it.

As for the the shallow lead arm it’s something I’ve always struggled with, maybe due to coming from a tennis background before golf. In terms of struggling swinging out do you just mean a very in to out path and in turn big blocks or flips left or the hands moving away from the body and causing problems.

Last thing, do you think the shallowness of my swing is what is causing me to struggle to get large amounts of ground after the ball, because I can’t get steep enough from the backswing position without coming over the top?

Appreciate it

Your weight might shift to your toes because it's so far in your heels at setup.

I think I'd like to see some slower swings with you changing the setup and swinging the shaft and your arms a bit more upright, and then we'll see what we see together from there. It's likely, but not guaranteed, to shed some good light on the subject (your golf swing).

    • Probably since the golfer has to swing the club back and up. The hands have to move back and up. You can feel them go back and up just by turning the shoulders and bending the right arm, because it brings your hands towards your right shoulder.  The difference is if you maintain width or not. Less width means a shorter feeling swing path so the more you need to lift the arms. Being as someone who gets the right arm bend at 110+ degrees, it's 100% a timing issue. I am use to like a 1.5+ second backswing. It probably should be like 1 second at most. Half a second or more will feel like an eternity. I have had swings where I keep my right arm straighter and I am still trying to time the downswing based on the old tempo.  Ideally, for me, it is probably going to be a much quicker and shorter (in duration) backswing, while keeping the right elbow straighter. Which also means more hinging to get swing length without over swinging.

    • I'm currently recuperating from surgery, so no golf, but have been thinking about this quite a bit. This and the don't overbend the right arm thing. It's hard for me to even pose the position, so I'm not 100% sure, but I feel like it's impossible to have the right humerus along the shirt seam and not overbend your right arm, unless your hands are down near your hips. If the left arm is up at or above the shoulder plane and your right arm is bent less than 90 degrees, then your right humerus has to raise or your hands will get pulled apart. Your left hand can't reach your right hand unless either the right upper arm is up or the right arm is overbent. Is that right? If it is, then focusing on not overbending the right arm would force you to raise the humerus. And actually thinking further on it, if you do overbend your right arm, then you're basically forcing your upper arm down or forcing your left arm to bend. Since (for me at least) bending the left arm too much is not something I think I need to worry about, it means that the bend in the trail arm is really the driving force behind what happens to the right humerus.
    • I managed to knock off a 3, a 13, and a 15 a couple of weeks ago. The 3 was a 185 yard par 3 with a 6 iron to 12 feet. 13 was a 350 yard par 4, which was a 2 iron and a 9 iron to about a foot. 15 was a 560 yard par 5 with a driver in a bunker, 4 iron into the semi, gap wedge to 8 feet and a putt.
