Daly wins the Shell this week and gets into the Masters! How sweet that would be

Uhm, impossible. The winner of this week's event doesn't get into The Masters. Last week's Zurich event was the last one that qualified for that perk.

Thanks for the info, i thought this weeks winner was in also.

Hopefully he doesn't embarrass himself this week, last week was not great...but it wasn't awful. If he was smart he would get a putting coach, i think it would make a big difference for him.

I thought last week was the last chance to get in via top-50 OWGR and this week's winner goes. According to

Masters.org: Qualifiations , one of the criteria is (15) "Winners of PGA Tour events that award a full-point allocation for the season-ending Tour Championship, from previous Masters to current Masters." This looks to me as though it would include this week's Shell Houston Open. Or does this week's winner go to the 2009 Masters? It might not matter, given the number of people in the field this week who are in this year's Masters and are likely or guaranteed to be in next year's.

Reports are that Butch Harmon is parting ways with Daly. The reasons are obvious - Daly has no intent of ever changing his destructive ways (on and off the course) and it sounds as if Harmon is sick of it and doesn't want to waste his time trying to help someone who won't go to the trouble of trying to help himself.

John Daly hasn't been relevant in ages. I think that he is on the verge of complete self destruction at this point. I doubt very seriously that he'll ever compete in a tournament again. It's just very sad to see so much talent gone to such considerable waste.

i agree.he t36th last year against all the odds at the US Open. so he can put a performance in when he really has to. I dont think his situation is as bad as its been hyped up to be.

I think his situation is probably even much worse than it has been hyped up to be, actually. It's to the point now where you have to be concerned for his well being. Just a really sad situation.

Well he made the pro am today..that's good.

He tees off in the first group tomorrow...7:20, Hopefully he has 2 alarm clocks in the RV.

I agree. Not much relevance except for any but the tabloids. And it is a very sad situation. I would rather not be subjected to his one man reality show any more.

Yup! JD IS seriously ill. Very sad indeed.

yeah, come on John, stay frosty!..we re looking for a couple of 66s from you to make the cut John.

Sadly, this could be the worst thing that could happen to JD. That is, for JD to play well... This could put a thought in his head that he can still compete(even in his current addicted state).... Thus, justifying(in his mind) a continuance of the destructive/addictive behavior.

While I personally would like to root for JD... I cannot, for fear it may enable him to continue down a dark destructive path(and possible death).

He's 6 over after todays round. Has he had a below par round in his last few events? I don't recall any but probably no more than one or two. He would have a hard time making cuts on the nationwide tour. He will have a hard time getting any sponsors exemptions next year unless something unexpected happens.

It looks like JD might make a cut..

"People think the size of the head is most important. Wrong. It's getting a quality shaft. test different shafts to see which goes the straightest. Also, more degrees of loft on the head is better than less. Eleven degrees is about right."

You are kidding right?

yes obviously--i just wish he would have played better because i dont think a good round tomorrow will help

    • Never practiced golf when I was young and the only lesson ever taken was a driver lesson. I feel like I'm improving every year. However, the numbers don't support my feeling about improving. I usually drop to 12-13 during the summer while playing the familiar courses around home and then go on golf trips in the fall to new courses and increase to end the year between 15-17. Been a similar story for a number of years now but hey, it's the best thing there is in life so not too bothered but reaching 9.9 is the objective every year. Maybe a few lessons and practice could help me achieve it since I pretty much have no idea what I'm doing, just playing and never practice.
    • I am semi-loyal. Usually buy four dozen of one ball and only play that until out and then determine whether to continue or try another one. Since starting my semi-loyal path to success, I've been playing the below, not in order: ProV1 ProV1x ProV1x left dash AVX Bridgestone BXS Srixon Z-star XV I am not sure if it has helped anything, but it gives a bit of confidence knowing that it at least is not the ball (while using the same one) that gives different results so one thing less to mind about I guess. On the level that I am, not sure whether it makes much difference but will continue since I have to play something so might as well go with the same ball for a number of rounds. Edit: favorite is probably the BXS followed by ProV1/Srixon Z-star XV. Haven't got any numbers to back it up but just by feel.
    • Will not do it by myself, going to the pro shop I usually use after Cristmas for input and actually doing the changes, if any, but wanted to get some thoughts on whether this was worthwhile out of curiosity.
    • In terms of ball striking, not really. Ball striking being how good you are at hitting the center of the clubface with the swing path you want and the loft you want to present at impact.  In terms of getting better launch conditions for the current swing you have, it is debatable.  It depends on how you swing and what your current launch conditions are at. These are fine tuning mechanisms not significant changes. They might not even be the correct fine tuning you need. I would go spend the $100 to $150 dollars in getting a club fitting over potentially wasting money on changes that ChatGPT gave you.  New grips are important. Yes, it can affect swing weight, but it is personal preference. Swing weight is just one component.  Overall weight effects the feel. The type of golf shaft effects the feel of the club in the swing. Swing weight effects the feel. You can add so much extra weight to get the swing weight correct and it will feel completely different because the total weight went up. Imagine swinging a 5lb stick versus a 15lb stick. They could be balanced the same (swing weight), but one will take substantially more effort to move.  I would almost say swing weight is an old school way of fitting clubs. Now, with launch monitors, you could just fit the golfer. You could have two golfers with the same swing speed that want completely different swing weight. It is just personal preference. You can only tell that by swinging a golf club.
    • Thanks for the comments. I fully understand that these changes won't make any big difference compared to getting a flawless swing but looking to give myself the best chance of success at where I am and hopefully lessons will improve the swing along the way. Can these changes make minor improvements to ball striking and misses then that's fine. From what I understood about changing the grips, which is to avoid them slipping in warm and humid conditions, is that it will affect the swing weight since midsize are heavier than regular and so therefore adding weight to the club head would be required to avoid a change of feel in the club compared to before?
