Thing Screwed to Grip of Putter - Counterweight Device?

Bought a putter off eBay, and it had a weird piece screwed into the top of the grip. It pops open, but nothing inside. Is this for placing some sort of counterweight? 

 

I took it off, but am just curious as to what is is.

I believe that is a ball retriever.  It saves one from some of the unpleasant bending that physical activity often entails.  The previous owner would have used it to get the ball out of the cup.
