I was rolling Circa 62 #3 putters at Golfsmith last night and really liked them. They had both the charcoal mist finish and the gun blue finish. For some reason the gun blue finish felt softer to me. Was my mind playing tricks on me or is there any substance to what my hands were feeling?

I understand the gun blue may require more care/maintenance.... is this an issue to be worried about?

If you go to the Cameron Collector forums, they have detailed descriptions on how to care for an oil can or gun blue finish.

I've owned a Circa 62 #2 gun blue for two years, I only oil it occasionally like after playing on a damp day, and have never had rust problems. I wouldn't consider it high maintainance. But I think they came out with the satin finish last year to combat the glare problem that the shiny gun blue finish has. Sometimes the glare is so bright that you can't see the alignment mark on the top.

The gun blue putters come with a cloth with silicon "oil" on it. I just keep it in my bag and wipe it down once every 3 or 4 rounds, which is less than I wipe my irons off which is after every shot.

I am not too sure regarding the softness between the two, I would think that they should both feel similar. In regards to the gun blue finish I had one of their older gun blue putters and it definitely requires more maintenence. If you don't take care of it it will begin to show rust pretty quickly. After a year or so mine started to rust a little even though I took very good care of it, so I ended up having it refinished locally to a sandblasted stainless steel type look. If I remember correctly baby oil works very well to keep it looking new. Also you can go to a gun store and actually buy gun blueing if you want to try to restore its look after a year or two. Lastly you should get a Scotty cloth that you can use to wipe the putter off after every round. Hope this helps.

The Charcoal Mist finish is supposed to be an improvement due the the fact that people were complaining about how much work it was to rub a putter head for 5 seconds with the silicon rag at the end of round.

The new finish is more durable, a side effect of that is that it also feels firmer. So no, you're right, the older (and better IMO) Circa felt softer. If you like that feel, buy it and then grab a spray can of electricians silicone. Spray it down maybe twice a season, I've heard that works extremely well if the 5 seconds is a problem with the rag.

Yeah, the original Circa did feel softer than the Charcoal Mist version. I have a Circa 62, #3 at home but that was two putters ago. As for maintenance, it was really no pain at all. Use the silicon cloth and buy some baby oil to keep the cloth moist. The coating on mine never came off and I played in bad weather all the time.

It's not so much work as it's remembering to do it.

Like if you play and it starts to rain and you run to put your clubs in the car. Then go to the 19th hole and by the time you get back to it it's got rust in the mill marks.
A good idea to just keep the oil rag in the headcover.

Thanks for the feedback. I'm probs gonna go with the gun blue finish as I'm kinda anal about keeping my clubs clean and looking sharp.
